i have a friend of mine who is getting into star wars. her favorite book, so far, is splinter of the minds eye.

im hoping to surprise her with a "fragment" like what is in the book, something a bright shiny neon red.

i have red dye, and clear resin, and i have some rock specimins i use for the "shard", but im totally lost on where to get neon red dye for clear castincraft.

any ideas?

thanks!

right, red dye from castincraft.

i have red, as mentioned above

i need neon red or hot pink, which is where the dilemma comes in. ive searched and havent had much luck at all.

id prefer to cast something in the color rather than try to find a neon red translucent paint.

appreciate the help though

I don't think you'll find a "neon" red dye that you can use as a consumer.
10 years in the art supply business, and I only saw true "neon" dyes in strictly industrial settings. Plenty of neon paints, but nothing that would tint something with the end result being translucent.

Isn't the splinter a deep non-flourescent red any way?

honestly... no idea. its been years since i read the book.

i always figured it was a glowing red color, sorta like neon colored plexi. i figured the hot pink or neon red color would sort of "glow" anyway. i have GITD powder i could use in the casting for it, but honestly its not that great and it smells something awful.

i may have to shave down some acrylic rod i have here to make this thing ... damn. i hate playing with power tools that can gobble my fingers like corn chips.

i may have to dig the book up and read it again, i remember it was kept in a bag or a box or something too.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kaiburr_crystal

It's crimson colored - not neon... but, embed a red led in there for some extra punch! Everyone loves lights in their props

You can find neon pigments all day at the consumer level, it's just a matter of them being compatible with the resins, and that will just be crap shot test and see what happens... Many are water based and will cause issues with most resins, but I'm sure if you dig deep enough you will find them... As for how translucent they are will probably depend more on how much you use, but a mix of regular dyes and neon pigments will probably result in something translucent with deep color...

One

Two

Three

Ones like the third one that is dispersed in glycerine, can in most cases be transfered to an alcohol dispersion over several days of simply cutting with alcohol or using other techniques to transfer to a "resin" safe dispersion...

Yeah, should have mentioned "with resin".

Lots of inks and pigments in acrylics/watercolors/gouaches, but not (easily found) for resins and synthetic fabrics.

Thanks for the clarification.

Glow Pigments

Here is a source for all kinds of pigments that will glow. Try the Fluorescent Pigments selection.
