Re: Kurtyboy Archives 2 March: SDS Tie helmet mods and all real parts upgrades
I always quite liked my SDS Tie helmet #25. My SDS stunt and hero trooper helmets have gone to new homes but I kept the Tie. A few things really bothered me however, the 'trident' detail was horrible, and the construction in the area behind the trident gaps was wrong.
In fact, having looked at three different Tie helmet manufacturers they all got the construction of this area wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if Gino was the only person to do it right.
So I took my SDS apart and performed some surgery, added in the missing panel, and replaced the trident with a slightly better one from Moncal. I also replaced the mowhawk strip which had cracked, and upgraded all the greeblies to original parts.
This is what the top of the faceplate looked like before. It hasn't been trimmed properly.
After trimming the top of the faceplate and adding the missing panel behind it:

And how it will look once finished. Trident has not been fixed in place yet.
Hoses, 'pill box', forehead greeblies, cone knobs and 'imperial discs': all 100% accurate 'found' parts.
I also had to replace the mowhawk strip as the old one had developed a few cracks over the years.
I may turn it into one of the hero helmets but this will mean removing the cone knobs as only the standard Ties had them
