    Jun 24, 2012 - Kingdom Hearts-Kingdom Key (Keyblade Build) #1

Hey guys ! just wanted to show you my keyblade build that I am trying to finish. I need some help but heres some progress pics first

Here's what im trying to make

And heres where i need help.

I want it to be clean and smooth so it can be paintable.
I'm thinking of adding spackling paste to fill the holes, so I can just sand it.
But will that work? has anyone tried this and will it even turn out smooth and clean? Im about to buy spackling paste and im wondering if that could work. Because i got the idea from this guy:

    Final shaping

I also have fiberglass resin and bondo if that will help just saying.

Thanks for looking ! Help is appreciated.

Before you do any filling, use an electric sander (or a handsander with lots o' elbow grease) to smooth down the edges you're about to fill as much as possible. Trust me...there's nothing more annoying then filling an area, sanding down excess filler, and then exposing a big hunk of the cardboard frame.

I've had great success with drywall spackle as a filling agent...it's easy to lay down, extremely easy to sand...but now I only use it to fill small areas (and even then, I cover it with a layer of Bondo). I say go straight to Bondo Body Filler...it takes much longer to sand (especially if you don't have an electric sander), but the durability is where it counts (I once spent months on a prop that was filled primarily with spackle...and I dropped it. The surface of the piece was easily filled, but every time you handled the prop, you could hear the shattered innards shaking around inside the foamcore frame). Two layers of Bondo should do it (one to fill in the initial cracks and another slightly overflowing layer to sand down to shape). All remaining divots and low spots should smoothed out with Bondo Spot putty.

And this is only an option, but you MAY have to skin the flat sides of your prop with a smoother paper, like thin posterboard. Maybe it's just me, but even after painting it a single color, I know that the texture differences between the cardboard and the smooth Bondo would bother me. To avoid this step, use sandwiched foamcore next time for your frame or maybe even light basswood. I made a sword last Halloween using such a method...scroll down this thread so you can see what I'm talking about:

    Good luck, dude!
