Jurassic Park Hammond Mosquito Cane WIP

So here's my newest project. John Hammond's cane from JP. So it's started as a 5/8 oak dowel covered in magic sculpt and has a rubber chair tip from lowes. I'm going to use a crane fly which i just captured tonight in a polyester resin formed in a silicone mold made for soap. I've been using this for reference Bonhams : A cane from Jurassic Park. I'm really trying to go for a natural uneven look for the bones

Awesome! Great start!
By the way.... A Canfield Ohio native here... Not far from Ashtabula ;)
Hey thanks! Yeah Canfield is not too far from here. I remember going the antique show at the fairgrounds in Canfield as a kid and pick up vintage star wars toys for next to nothing lol.

So i am not sure if anybody else has seen this or not but this is also a good reference although i am not certain whether it's real or not. They say it is but who knows. One thing to point out is that this cane, just as the one shown on screen, is not perfect. The egg is not perfectly shaped and neither is the cane. If you look close as hammond turns the cane you can even see a seem from the mold used to form the amber

I actually miss Canfield these days : lol
That cane is discussed here: http://www.therpf.com/f45/beverly-h...9/?highlight=Jurassic+park+Beverly+Hills+pawn
There are a lot of the cast gift canes going around these days as "production pieces"

An example of a gift cane

which has no rubber foot. Now this one is supposed to be real at universal studios from the lost world but also has no rubber foot. My guess is it's a gift cane too

Sadly I already broke my crane fly so i need to find another. Actually probably several!

Supposedly there were only 2 screen-used Canes which were gifted to Spielberg and Attenborough

The show on tv said 10 were made in total but I'm not sure. 2 seems like a low number but who knows!

So i got my mold today. It''s just a super stretchy silicone mold of an egg. And i did a little test of the resin. Also I have some bugs coming in the mail since big crane flys are really hard to find right now. I got a medium sized one the other day and stuck it in the freezer. This is the key to not having things fall off!

This is a test run of the amber with "mosquito". I used a small crane fly found in my backyard. I have two medium sized and one gigantic western crane fly in the freezer which i bought online which will be used in the final piece. I learned mainly that I have to be very careful to not use to much catalyst because it'll make the reason more clear and begin to crack. It's hard to see the bug because it's covered with scratches from the mold which need polished and maybe sanded out

So I realized today that I haven't updated my progress on this so here we go. On my second attempt at the amber i ruined two of my mail order crane flies leaving only the big one, which was entirely way too big as you can see. So I got another smaller one from my brother which looks pretty nice but i am not happy with the placement within the amber. So now i was lucky enough to have found 3 more decent sized crane flies on the outside of my apartment, so i will be trying this again very soon. Note that these have not been sanded or polished yet
