Dec 16, 2007 - Which iPaq was used for the Stargate Atlantis Scanner? #1

I thought it had been discussed before but couldn't find the exact answer via search. Does anyone know which iPaq was used for the scanner on Atlantis? It looks like the 5000 series and appears to have the fingerprint scanner but that still means several models. Here's a cap of the scanner.

Kind of looks like a 2215:

But I think you're right... looks like the 5400 with the 802.11 nob at the top...

not familier with the unit, but I am curious. Is the graphic super imposed, or was the iPaq hacked to allow the display to do custom graphics routines?

Given the clarity of the image on-screen, my guess is super-imposed in post. HOWEVER, you don't need to 'hack' an iPaq to display 'custom' full-screen graphics. There are many ways to do this, but it depends on what you want to use it for. If you want it just as display, you could easily do a full-screen video with loops. If you wanted it interactive, you can do a full-screen Flash movie (give you have the appropriate authoring software). If it's static, it's easy enough to just do a full-screen jpg.

Whatever the underlying PDA is, you've got to make a mould for that semi-transparent body (tough to see geometry of it as it's often in shadows and white doesn't give good enough definintion.

Would be interested to see a replica w/ backlit static graphic (remove guts of thing and backlight w/ EL sheet perhaps)

Most likely a second hand protective cover. I've seen them very, very similar for iPods at WalMart among other places...

The graphics are most definitely being displayed by the iPaq and not being done post, watch the scenes and you'll agree. As for the case? I've seen a few clear and translucent cases and this is custom. It would make no sense to cover most of the buttons of the unit, which the case on the show does.

I'm absolutely certain it's a custom made body to hold the IPAQ. No body of anything I've ever seen for PDAs is that big and bulky.

Bump in the hopes that someone has the same model iPaq. See the image in the first post. Thanks.

ipaq 5550 looks like the right model.

With some work a mold could be made to cast the wrap around out of clear silicone.

With some paint work, you could probably make a passable copy of the prop.

Bump with a few more closeups as well as two small shots of the custom stand for the scanner. Oh, with these larger and clearer caps you can see that there is some Ancient text on the upper right side and middle left side of the scanner.

    The stand.

While looking for more close up shots of the scanner I came across one of the clearest shots of the earpiece communicators that they all wear. I think it's the first time I've seen one off of the actor.

Well... it's clear from these images that the case isn't cast. Looks like laser cut plexi with a clamshell design. From watching it in motion you can see that several buttons are accessible as well as the charge/sync port in the base. I would say it's done in 4 parts. Two thinner parts for the top and bottom and two for the thicker midplates.

Other than weaposns, Atlantis didn't have too many props I'd like to see done, this being the prime one after the ZPM which originated in SG1 so I guess it doesn't count.

here's my old 5450 that surfaced while I was moving house last week
