Couldn't you use one of those tasteless fibre optic ornament things you know the ones that are just a spray of fibres that have a colour changing light in the base ?
Probably find one in a junk shop or garage sale or something for next to nothing.
Yep, no need to find a fake alternative when the real deal is so damn cheap and easy to obtain they are only $6 on Amazon.com brand new, and they can be had for $3-$4 new on Ebay...defstartrooper said:

If you just want fiber line without the light transmitting properties why not use fishing line?
I dont think fishing line will do. It needs to be thicker than that.
Look for small diameter, clear weed trimmer line. Most of what I see is colored but every now and then I see clear.
