I was wondering if someone had a simple way that a "newbie" like me could make some Mass Effect weapons... I'm just starting and still working on figuring out the actual costume part. Most of the templates or guides I have seen are for experienced prop makers and I am FAR from it. I know you guys are extremely talented and probably can help me best! Thanks in advanced!

thing is, you learn from your mistakes. there is no such thing as good and easy. but thats the fun thing, learning from your mistakes.

i would just jump in and try out stuff, its way more fun than get the prechewed stuff over and over again.

I'm with Eye of Sauron. If you don't have access to a lot of tools, I'd suggest you do your first build with something user-friendly. Clay, foam board, and an exacto knife or box cutter can do wonderful things.

    Good luck and have fun.

Yep. I think it was the almighty Matt Munson that once said (paraphrasing) "I learned more from my mistakes than I did when things went right".

Jump in with both feet and start learining.

Look through the forum at all the build threads to get ideas on easy ways to do things.
The current craze is paper models with resin and bondo for finishing things off.
The other current craze is making everything out of foam.

All those items are cheap and easy to use.

My first X-Wing chest box was made out of a sheet of card stock that was later laminated with thin styrene sheet.
Looked just like it was vac formed.

Nerf guns. Bondo. Miliput. Metal tape (like they use for duct work) Spray paints (I prefer Krylon ultra flat colors) and blue painters tape for masking.

Check out Johnsonarms nerf prop gun thread here for inspiration on mass effect mods for nerf guns too. He's done quite a few of them now:

Modding toy guns and the like is a great way to hone scratch building skills, BTW.

If you hit any specific road blocks along the way, post up photos and there is always somebody around to jump in and offer suggestions.

I know if you're looking for the weapons there are a few pepakura files out on the net, and I think there are even a couple 2D patterns for the weapons so you can make it using MDF or something similar.

And be sure you wear a respirator, not just a mask, if you do any work with MDF. That stuff is stupid toxic.

Yes, same with resin. If you buy something cast in resin and need to do a lot of work on it with the dremel, cutting, sanding, wear a respirator and do the work outside.

No matter how much you read, there is nothing better than just getting your hands dirty on a build. You learn what techniques you are comfortable with, what materials you like to use, how you build something.....the list is endless.

Go build something! There's no way you can get worse.....you only get better!
