Jul 15, 2011 - Illusive concepts Jabba maquette ruined? #1

First off I'm not sure if this should be in this section so my apologies. Ok so years ago I bought the big Illusive concepts Jabba maquette.About a year ago i packed it in a box to store it until I had a better place to display it.Well i took it out today and its all cracked looking and under the exterior cracked coating its gooey and sticky.Basically the coating they used to seal it and give him that slimey look appears to have broken down. I know latex is natural material and will rot and break down over time, and the latex underneath this coating appears to be in ok condition but is def. also showing signs of its age.
It was always taken care of and was not stored near any extreme heat or cold, any way to fix this or am i better off chucking it?
Would be a shame to make him trash can fodder.

Here is what he used to look like:

I have the same maquette but mine has none of the gooey stuff, except for directly around the corner of the mouth. I can't imagine why yours does...

Edit: Just saw your second photo. Hmmmm...

I'm stumped on that one. Usually when latex breaks down it just dries and cracks, or so I thought. I would have no idea what process this is that yours has gone through. But best of luck in trying to get it back straight.

Maybe the guy running the sealer gun the day mine was done went crazy lol, funny thing is the back which has little to no sealer on it looks fine the latex is still nice and supple with little to no deterioration.

Like I said I never used any cleaners on this,it was never in direct sunlight or stored in any wet, hot or cold conditions,Im bummed.

To me it appears the sealer/coating they used is breaking down and causing the latex underneath to break down quicker. It almost looks like someone took a blow torch to him.

Yeah, he may have had a field day or something.

It seems the quality of these Illusive pieces varied from piece to piece. Mine has never been as shiny as yours in the second pic, so again, the "sealer guy" must have been a little more enthusiastic with yours.

Is the flaky looking stuff dried sealer...?

I think it looks better now!

Check with Tom Spina for ideas.

yeah the flaky stuff is dried sealer and up close its all cracked and then some of it is really gooey like hot bubble gum on pavement

And yeah the Illusive concept stuff was very sporadic in quality. I have one of the Chewbacca busts they did and mine looks pretty nice but when I see other ones higher numbered one they look like crap

I also agree with the poster above about Tom Spina. Barring any insight from him, you could always tie a chain around his neck and call it "The Corpse Of Jabba"...

The sideshow one is really nice and there are a few IC Jabbas on ebay but most likely would suffer the same fate at some point as mine.
I started sculpting a 12" (16th) scale animated version of Jabba but would like to do the movie version too. Here is a WIP of the animated one I started.

I don't know about that. As sad as it is, I think what's happened to yours is a unique circumstance. I've had mine for many years and, aside from some dust that I undoubtedly need to take care of, it's as good as the day I bought it.

Awesome! It looks like you've definitely got the skills for it. I don't know what the IC Jabbas are going for nowadays, but from the looks of this, I'd make my own if I were you.

I had to laugh at that pic. It looks like Jabba had a hard night of drinking!

Heh. That's actually my Illusive Concepts Jabba (and part of my couch ). I've seen a lot of people on ebay and other stores using that image as a stock image for their auctions, etc., which is actually a pretty problematic thing to do considering how this piece has problems with deterioration. I've seen it in various stages of decay, although I think yours is the worst case I've seen. I don't think it's possible to save it, but if you want to get a replacement you can get them for $50-$60 on ebay if you are patient. Mine still looks like the picture above, so I don't necessarily think it's a foregone conclusion that they will decay. Maybe keeping it out of the box/plastic helps.

All roads lead to the rpf, don't they?

My Jabba is still in excellent condition also. As I told skygunbro, I can't imagine what's gone wonky with his. But it's definitely suffering...
