Hey guys! Can any of you guys give me some good cheap prop ideas. Any Doctor Who, Dexter, or any Sci fi or horror movie props would be my main choice but anything will do. Sorry if this is in the wrong area or something but Im a bored 15 year old on summer vacation with nothing to do. Thanks for checking this out.

You could always check out indymogul on youtube. They give tutorial videos on how to make props, effects, and other things if you want to make short films. They also give the price range and the items you need for props in their videos. They also have a website I think you could check out. Hope this helps!

And also, I don't think they make new tutorials anymore. You can just check out their profile for all the tutorials that they made.

If you want a long-term project, I say get some clay and start learning how to sculpt. I say long-term because without experience, anything you do will probably take a while to get to a finished state that you're happy with. It's something I wish I would have started on a long time ago and had a better grasp on.

Prop ideas? What is it that thrills you? What item is out there that really gets you jazzed and think to yourself, "Yeah, I want that. I'll bet I can make a replica of that."? I'm pretty sure that's how a lot of us got into this hobby in the first palce.

There is so much information on this forum that can inspire you to create whatever replica prop you may wish to posses. And when starting out, it doesn't really have to be dead on accuarate. Just do your best. If you find mistakes, you learn from them. That's just how it is when starting out and develope your skills.

From your age perspective, I'm the old guy sitting in a rocking chair whittling on a piece of wood that may become something rather cool. I never had this much information available to me before and made do with what I could find for references and only had knowledge of materials available to me. This forum has really opened up a lot more than I could have imagined.

Only you can decide what it is you want to do for a project. The well here is very big and deep. Use the search feature here to assist in your endevor, and I'm sure you will discover the great feeling of creating something for yourself, and with a lot more information available to you today, by yourself.

    Well lets see.
R2-D2 cost me next to nothing he is made out of foam.

Wall-e cost me next to nothing he is made out of foam.

I am going to be doing a full size foam Dalek, it should cost around $50 in foam.
Ironman helmet cost me around $20 to make.

K-9 so far has cost less then $20 in foam.

I am not trying to Brag or show off my work in your thread, I am just trying to show you that you don't want to let the amount of money you have limit your imagination. Start collecting scrap pieces and you never know what you will make.

How about a TARDIS key to start with or a custom sonic screwdriver? Get a thing pipe or even some dowel and glue on some little pieces of whatever, spray it up and you have a sonic screwdriver.

Is there a particular movie you really enjoy? If so, was there any one prop that stood out where you thought "...oh man... I would love to have one of those..."?

If you get discouraged easily then be careful about your first project. I picked a project I thought would be easy and six months later I still haven't finished it. I have had a lot of set backs because one thing or another has gone wrong, mostly because I'm learning.

Pepakura may be the way to go to start off, very easy to do if you have the patience!!
Make sure that whatever you make, you will:
    A. enjoy it
    B. Don't bite off more than you can chew (try and keep it small and simple for the first one)
    C. make sure it's something you want and will display / wear or use - Nothing worse than building something, that ends up hidden in a cupboard or in the trash!!

why wont you start off with making something small like a weapon form a game or movie you enjoy, pepakura would also seem the best if you have the patience for it. you can also buy some foam and turn a pepakura file into a template to make a foam iron man helmet or whole suit.

Back to the Future (BTTF) hover boards are easy. $10 in either hobby store foam board or Home Depot sheet insulation, a box cutter or Exacto knife, and 6 sheets of printed paper...

The key is to get started...
