Apr 25, 2011 - Hello to all TARDIS fans #1

Just wanted to say hello after a few months of lurking by asking for some information. It's been a dream of mine to build a full size TARDIS. But due to a disability & space issues, it will have to wait a few years. I did, however, come up with a small way to get my fix. I have started work on a series of the "PULL TO OPEN" door signs from the various TARDISes throughout the years. I will have a few pics up in a few days of my first mock up (Eleven's).

Does anyone here know the width of the trim around the signs for the different models? My first one is using a 2 inch pine as a starting point, so I want the others to be in scale with this one.

The next one will be 9 & 10's so the dimensions won't change, but any additional info would be appreciated.

Are you asking about the trim around the actual signboard itself -- part of the pull-to-open door, that is -- or the wood around the opening the pull-to-open door fits in?

I daresay you'll get a better/faster response on TARDIS-building specifics over at TARDIS Builders - Index.

Yes. Part of the door itself. Thank you. I'll try there.

Ah, I see. I daresay 2" is a pretty generous width. The info on the TardisBuilders site will set you right, though, I'm sure. Considerable expertise there in the various incarnations of the box.

WOW...Just got my mock-up together & 2 inches is VERY generous. Now my problem is this. I asked a relative to make a simple frame for me per the 2 inch border. He went above & beyond since I was family & used his "best" pine, counter-sunk the screws & made plugs to hide them. How do you go back & say "Sorry. My bad"?

    Pride is a bad thing...

Or, make a huge pull-to-open door, I suppose

Speaking more seriously, depending on how he made the frame, it may be relatively easy to trim it down.

That's the problem. Wood screws about 1/4 of an inch in, then plugged. I'll get a pic up in a minute.

Here is an idea of what I'm trying to do. This was the closest hardware I could find for the 1st try & I think that may be why I thought 2 inches would be in scale.

    Now I see the picture.

That's for sure a whumpin' frame. Ornamentally, you might get away with it, though.

Yep. Whumpin' indeed. As I said, my plan is to do the 5 or 6 "major" variations of the sign door based on the 5 toys CO has made. The TV Movie will also be represented but hasn't been made yet. I appreciate the input, deck5. I've lurked here long enough without contributing. Other than a Fourth Doctor's scarf I've started & CT's sonic I bought, I haven't really had anything to show.

Just realized rebelscum is probably the man I should have checked with on here.

    Dang It !!!

A nice job. I'd be surprised if even the largest incarnation of the pull-to-open door frame was more than 1.25" wide.

I see that now. I think that my problem is that the hardware is too big for the door. I was trying to guesstimate the clearances on either side of the handle & 2 inches looked right for a mock-up. Then, bless his heart, my uncle put all that effort in. I'll keep this one as an example of "MY" TARDIS.
