The $21k was pretty shocking, to say the least. Portal was a huge hit, and as much as I love Half-Life, I didn't expect this thing to do as well as the Portal Gun did last year. All said, the auction was an amazing event to attend and I can only hope my time allows me to participate in it for years to come.

As it turns out, I actually still have the gun in my possession, as the new owner wants it to be modified to run off 110V wall power in a custom-built display cabinet. Also, I'll be tackling a second one of these in the coming month or so, only this time it will be the blue "Physics Cannon" seen in HL:EP1 and 2. Fun times ahead!

In a few days I'll get my blog writeup done which will have the code available for download, as well as a video of the gun in action. Taking some time over the holidays to clean and reorganize the shop, but back to it after Jan 1!

Good lord! That is the most impressive scratch to life I've seen in a while. Not sure how I missed this thread. Kudos on the fetch at auction! Man, that is a piece of art.

Probably going to revisit TF2 sometime in the future. Not sure about Half Life stuff, nothing on the books for now, but we'll see...

To bring up an old subject: I don't really think the crystals are Xen materials. The Xen crystals were always used/referenced around teleportation type events (the resonance cascade, the failed teleport in Kleiner's lab, etc), and the Gravity Gun doesn't seem much related to that in the fiction at all. The "real" name of the weapon is the "zero-point energy field manipulator", and to me there was always a striking resemblance to the zero-point modules from Stargate in terms of shape and color.

As for the build itself - words cannot express how amazing it was! It's amazing that it took 8 years for a build of this quality for such an iconic weapon. It's really a shame you can't provide the high resolution model or any of that information for us, but your build is definitely an inspiration.

Could you elaborate on the screen meshing material that you use on the interior of the barrel? Whatever it is looks perfect in there.
