Nov 12, 2009 - Gil Hibben Knife Shop Pics #1

Well, I finally feel I have something worthy to post here on the RPF! I've always been a lover of knives and blades. I made my first knife back in high school (about 20 years ago), and got back into doing it seriously about 3 years ago as a hobby/side business.

One of my knifemaking heroes has always been Gil Hibben, who created the knives for Rambo 3, Rambo 4, and became the "Official Klingon Armorer" for Star Trek. He had knives in "Star Trek-Nemesis", Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and several other productions.

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend one of Gil's shop classes, and came away with plenty of knowledge and food for thought that will help me along in my own knife making journey.

I also came away with these awesome pics from inside Gil's shop and home! Enjoy:

The last pic here is of the knife I made during the class. A Bowie with a 12 1/2 blade and coffin-handle.

    Hope you liked them!

Thanks for sharing. I met Gil at the Atlanta Knife Show and he's a real nice guy.

You make knives? I know a bunch of knife makers and have made a few throwers. Post some of your stuff when you start making them.

    Some great looking knives there.

    I met Gil years ago and he's a class-act.

Nice looking Sword of Kahless, even Dragon would be proud of that one!

That's awesome, man. I almost attended that session, as well! Timing didn't work out, but I hope to go next year.

Can you give some some more details as to how the knife design process works for Gil's classes? I have a pretty crazy design that I really want to do, could be a make or break for me to attend.

    Thanks for the pics!

I still have my Mortal Combat dagger that is pictured in the top of the big display frame..Its also the middle one pictured in the three dagger display.
(Signature edition without the MC logo).
IIRC, Gil used 24K gold twisted wire to wrap the handles on those models.

    Thanks for posting the pics!

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

Franz- I'll post some pics of my pieces as soon as I can

apollo- That Sword of Kahless was displayed at the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas

Uncle Jake- There were four of us in the class, three of us modified some of Gil's designs for our projects, and one had a design already drawn out when he came to class. (He even brought his own handle material) I would imagine Gil would let you make your design, as long as it could be done in 40 hrs. (5 days X 8hrs)

    Again, thanks everyone.

    Harry
