Sep 18, 2012 - FINISHED! Mass Effect - Predator blueprint. Any requests? #1

Longtime lurker on this forum, first time poster.

I love the Mass-Effect series and specifically the weapons. Since I don't have the skills to actually make these weapons, I've started drawing them like blueprints. First sketching them out in Illustrator and then finishing it off in Photoshop.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this, I would like to make this more like a blueprint, perhaps by adding descriptions to certain parts. Naming the parts though is difficult. I don't want to name a part, when it has no grounds to do so.

Also, I would like to offer my design to people who want to use for display with an actual prop. Just drop me a PM and I could send you the HR-file. I want to finish it first, of course.

Updated the drawing. Will add front and back (if I can find reference), but for now, I just made it a bit more like a blueprint.

Worked on the lowres file, will apply same thing to the high-res tomorrow.

    Your thoughts, please!

A great start, although you may want to reconsider your choice of logo. Or maybe you don't, it depends what you're going for.

With "Mass Effect 3" on there it looks like you're trying to recreate real-world concept art from the game. If you want it to look like blueprints from the in-fiction weapons factory, you should come up with a fictional logo for the manufacturer that fits the setting. Or maybe a Cerberus or N7 connection. Characters in the world wouldn't use the name of the game, although they would reference the use of mass effect fields.

Decide that and you're on your way.

edit: and a minor note, for some reason I picture the "approved" stamp as significantly larger. Don't know why, so your preference.

Thanx Lurksmith! Great feedback! I agree with your reasoning and am ditching the ME3 logo and creating my own.

The "approved" stamp was from internet anyway. A quick and dirty solution. Making that one from scratch today as well. Also thought about making a stamp that says: "standard issue" or something.

Also making this wider to be able to fit the front and back view.

By the way, can I edit my thread title and if so how? Couldn't find it in the FAQ or Thread tools.

Love the blueprint. It looks like something straight out of the game, save for the naming bit, which Lurksmith touched on already.
I've been lurking for a few days, and I registered (technically) yesterday, so fellow newbie here.
Are you going to keep it strictly blueprints and art, or would you be interested in having it made as an actual piece?
If you were to make some more blueprints with dimensions and such, I would love to try my hand at making it. I warn you, I'm a complete newbie here. However, I've been studying techniques from a bunch of different guys, and I think I might actually be able to do it. I've got zero art training beyond a class or two in high school, but I would love to take a swing at this, if you'd be interested in such a thing.

EDIT: Set to get notifications from this thread.

I would love to send you the files when they are finished Fidelis, but I think there are better 3-d models to use for actual prop making.

Several people on this forum have detailed 3D-models of several ME-3 guns,
I don't know if they'll share them for free though.
Look around and ask them would be my suggestion.

Making corrections as we speak, using Lurksmith's suggestions. This is becoming more awesome by the minute. It takes a lot to make me happy with it though....

Ok, this is pretty much turned out the way I wanted.

Did some research on the weapon, lost some decals, added some details, a front and back view, lost the ME-3 logo, added the manufacturer logo, etc etc.

Please, again, your thoughts on this.

Very cool. The logo fits the theme nicely. Something else to consider might be some way to represent how all of the Mass Effect weapons fold up for ease of carry. The blueprint might reference the collapsed state as an inset or something, or call it out by noting dimensions folded and extended. Just a thought, I wouldn't want it to see it get too busy.

Ah, I understand. I would refer to the other 3-D models, yet I haven't found a good, free program. Any suggestions? I don't plan to print much out (at least not yet), as seen in pepakura builds, but I'd love to be able to view things in 3-D without having to take a dozen screenshots and eyeball things for dimensions and ratios to get it on paper. My cousin was telling me about a program that he'd heard of that could import models straight from any game, yet I'm doubtful that such a thing would be free.

Sorry Fidelis, perhaps that question deserves it's own thread? I certainly am not an expert on this, so I can't help you with this.

@Lurksmith, I did not really remember the collapsibility of the weapons in the Mass-Effect series, I kind of forgot I guess. (how weird, I've played them all...), I am not adding that though to the blueprints, I think it would make it to busy/crowded.

Concluding, I think this is the way to go with these blueprints. Are there any request for the next model I should do?
