Jun 12, 2008 - Evolution of your Obi-Wan Lightsaber? #1

So I was going through all my old pictures and got a kick out of how much the Obi-Wan saber has evolved.

How many versions do you guys have?

I think I have about four different versions.

V.1 - Check out the Philips head screws in the clamp!!!

V.2 - modern AS handwheel, Icons style emitter, bulky square gear

V.3 - Gavidoc emitter, Radio Shack transistors, new-older booster (Serafino & mine)

V.4 - replicas from real booster, real AS handwheel, real balance pipe, real grenade, real clamp... FINALLY there!

Well I'm still hunting a real grenade, as all the other parts I have are original and correct.

I've had a whole host of replica parts over the years, but let them go as they never quite nailed it for me - apart from Serafino's booster.
Still - in a few months I'll have (as many other will here) the ultimate replica regards accuracy to the actual prop, thanks to Russ, Serafino, Chris and a few other members.

I'll be sure to post pics when it's complete!

This is what mine looked like a few years ago.

Roman sink knob, moded Chen (gear), Roman clamp & spacer, Obi1Kenny washer, Chen grenade, Gavidoc (crazy) 3piece emitter.

I sold this a while back. I'm starting over with newer, more accurate parts.

Roman, I have one made from all your latest parts (with stormpath transistors), and one made from all real parts except the emitter (which is one of Serafino's).

I'll also soon have one made from all of Russ's parts.

Plus enough parts to maybe put together a sort of 'Frankenstein' version: modern AS handwheel, Serafino booster, Biskit clamp, Chen emitter. All I need is a grenade to complete this one

Well, here's my first one, back in 2000:

    And my second, from 2001:

I also have a V3, using some of my parts and a gavidoc emitter and pommel, but it's still in pieces. I also have a Romans final version which will be my V4, but because I was never able to find a threaded rod to fit the whole thing over, it's also still in pieces.

    Roman,

I see you still incorporate the upper notches on the frag body. Have you considered the contrary, or do you believe just as strongly as the beginning?

I still believe very strongly that the notches are at the top.

I mean you can see them on the actual prop.

    Hi Roman,
Thank you for posting these evolutionary pics.

These sabers have historical significance, and I really hope examples are being kept intact.

    Roman,

I suppose the anamoly in the first picture is a distinct possibility, but given the low resolution and pixel distortion, I can't form an opinion from this image alone.

However, in response to the second picture, I do not believe it's the same grenade that was used on the Chronicles prop. This is because the frag body grooves are cut asymmetrically, as opposed to the symmetrical grooves on Chronicles grenade, and the apparent lack of an incuse point at the bottom of the windvein sleeve that's prominently visible in both Chronicles images regardless of the resolution. Of course, it would be naive to conclude that this grenade was never used on the hero prop at some point, but it would be a notable mistake to replicate the notches for the wrong grenade--that is, the Chronicles version if it should actually be the case that it's notch-free.

I suppose the relevant question to entertain for the moment is whether the presence of a notch following one groove necessitates the presence of notches above every other groove.

By the way, I've always found the unidentified part below the grenade in the "prototypes" picture interesting. We already know that the correct emitter is a Derwent balance pipe, but is it possible that this end section was used for the emitter of the shared stunt?

The grenade on the table at Bapty is NOT the same one that is on the prop.
I really hoped it was too, but I'm absolutely positive it's not. The easiest difference to spot is the width of the frag body segments do not match.

I do however think it is possible there were TWO Obi-Wan sabers although there isn't any solid photographic proof.
We know for a fact they had a second grenade and they likely had duplicates of all the rest of the parts - at least 8 more emitters (from one Derwent engine), one more sink knobs (hot and cold), and probably 2 boosters (ANM2s were mounted in pairs on aircraft).

As for the Chronicles/Mechanismo pic circled. That copy is too low res. If you consult high res versions it's obvious there are no notches in the top ring.

It would be somewhat of an overstatement if I said that I found these propagandist assertions unappreciative all the time.

I'm conducting a mutually investigative conversation concerning various details of this saber that I feel is all the more justified in a thread that documents the evolutionary line of a popular collectible.

The two prominent replicators of this saber, Hez and Roman, have been veterans at this mission for the better part of a decade, and while their work has been undeniably competetive, I prefer the more appropriate perspective of respecting both their work as the best in the community.

The passion and quality of their work undeniably speak for themselves in the pictures posted, and I certainly didn't think anyone who neglects to reiterate it would mean the automatic implication of the contrary.

Although, if your meaning is that my mere presence contributes any staling, then I'll doubtfully concede.

I thought the way that the grenades were machined meant that some had notches, and some didn't? Mine didn't, for instance. The second photo that Roman posted clearly shows them to be there though.

In an effort to get the thread back on track, and for those who don't already know, the grenade I had was used by MR to produce their Obi-wan (they changed a couple of details to better coincide with photo references though), and was copied wholesale by Parks for his sabers.

WARNING LONG POST ALERT. I've had three, but now only have two. I haven't done anything new to them since the last time I posted in my thread. I have no desire to upgrade the remaining discovered parts; the booster, sink knob...I have one of the latest balance pipes but mismatched the inner rings on the sabers to keep the look I wanted. So here they are from what I started with to as they are now:

2003 via ebay: #1 & #2, bottom one was bought from Roman. All three were AFBB with no weathering. They all had V.3 emitters, V.3 boosters, with plastic AS handwheels. However, all three had the added grenade piece inside the emitter, but one of them had a flat inner ring while the other two had sloped inner rings.

These three became these. I was into the "foil on the clamp" look at the time so the two weathered versions had it. I started with screws and then found the transistors at Radio Shack. I also bought a set from someone that had the washers on them. I used to swap them around for picture time . The two weathered hilts, and the pristine. I really liked the copper neck on the ROTS saber, so I added copper to both of mine, pristine and weathered. I ended up trading the third saber with the brass neck for a MR Dooku.

2005 We moved to Georgia. I added the covertec on the AFB when I got a V2 Roman pommel. Never liked the skinny cubes on the V2. Not much else changed on the AFB for a while except taking down some of the gloss on the grenade. I got a V3 pommel for the weathered hilt. I went back and stripped the paint on the stem and re-did the weathering on the grenade and stem, also decided I didn't like the foil on the clamp anymore...two sets of stormpath transistors by then too.

2007 Then one day I was taking a gander at my weathered hilt and I dropped it on its head. It was enough to smash the emitter face real nice. I could not find the same V3 style, so I got one of the new balance pipes. So, to keep the copper grenade piece in the emitter, I swapped the outer shells. Got a pair of Gavidoc pommels, and a chome clamp for the AFB. The only thing not pictured, is a metal ROTS activation plate. I swapped out the plastic with the metal and that is where these sabers are today.

I consider this issue proved. The Tatooine production photo shows a saber with the transisters off-axis in exactly the opposite way from the Chronicles saber. [Edit 6-18-08--forgot to mention that the upper part of the stem is also clearly larger than on the Chronicles saber.]

Yup. Some had no notches at all, some had them only on the south side, etc.

But as lonepigeon pointed out, that's a different grenade.

Apologies for following the off-topic lead here. I agree this stuff would be better discussed in another thread (such as the one I posted earlier).

First Obi I ever had was from Hez back in ’01. Here are the only pics I have of that

Then I had a set of Roman’s latest parts

Now I have collected all genuine parts, though all are not 100% accurate.

I still plan on getting a set of Russ’ parts as well.

That's a great grenade though. If I'd had one like that I don't know that I'd have parted with it. That's one of the two most accurate real boosters I've seen--or maybe it's the same one, just a new owner.
