    Jul 4, 2012 - Elysium Props #1

One of the first props has been revealed from the upcoming movie Elysium, directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9).

The prop gun is titled Chem Rail and is likely one of many cool props we will see from this movie. And as speculated in one of the article links, this might be like a railgun which shoots chemical rounds.

Looks like there is an elaborate bracing system that is worn with the gun as well, nice combo.

Is Weta making the props for the movie? Maybe we'll get a replica like the D9 guns

Look at some of Aaron Beck's work here for Avatar:

And tell me that gun doesn't have his name all over it.

Heavy Future: Elysium Comic-Con Video Interview with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster

Since the year 2013 began, whenever I am online catching up on movie updates, I keep hoping to see some news about the Elysium trailer or more so for the actual trailer to be online. The movie releases on August 9 and I'll be waiting another week until its India release on August 16. (Damn you Sony Pictures India).

So now in anticipation of the trailer I began going through the various comic-con videos which I had watched and saved from movie sites back in July 2012, but I forgot to share them online before.

If you enjoyed District 9 and if you're remotely excited about Elysium, you should consider watching these interview videos which are embedded in the above page.

Matt Damon gets into more details as to how the movie took off and how he got the role, Neill Blomkamp's creative approach, importance of comic-con, among other things. Jodie Foster talks about comic-con, her movie Contact, her role in Elysium, themes explored in the film, the studio's involvement with Neill, her approach in acting, her directing projects.

There is a moment in the video where Matt Damon mentions, "there was a whole separate book on weaponry". And I couldn't stop smiling while thinking about the awesome weapons and props this movie is going to showcase.

You can now pre-order the book Elysium: The Art of the Film, which will also include inputs from designer Syd Mead.

I am pleasantly surprised at Syd Mead's involvement. Thanks for the heads-up.

I am also the proud owner of the District 9 'making of' book. Looking forward to this one.

(Aside: I actually bought a magazine from overseas just because it had some cool D9 stuff in it.)

This thread needs more action. I love the aesthetics Neill Blomkamp goes for in his movies. His props all have this hard tactile reality to them, even the alien guns in District 9. I ****ing love them.

I think I'm noticing a plot trend in Blomkamp's stories. The main hero always seems to stumble upon some form of technology that physically empowers him to defeat the enemy.
Matt Damon's exo-suit seems like it might be cobbled together from scavenged technology, and Wikus in District 9 accidentally sprayed himself with prawn splooge which enabled him to use their weapons.

    Yep.
Just gonna throw this out there, even though others may have already said it: Elysium is almost a straight rip-off of Battle Angel Alita, right down to the aesthetics.

    But wait!
Battle Angel Alita is my favorite sci-fi story of all time. While I acknowledge Elysium is a rip-off, it is not a cheap one. It looks very well thought-out and put together. Blomkamp isn't a slouch. Elysium looks incredibly awesome, so I'm not complaining.

It *might* owe a big debt to Alita. I admit that was my first thought after seeing the trailer. You've got the BIIIIG space station, the desolate Earth, the class divisions, the cybernetics.

That's not enough to call 'rip-off' though, when all we have to judge by is a trailer. If Damon's character is a participant in a lethal cyborg spectator sport, then okay fine.

Okaaay, um, watched it again and noticed that town *really* looks like the Scrapyard, and there's apparently a bunch of interplanetary terrorist/revolutionaries backing Damon's assault, so, uhhhh...
