re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
Using the JK nautilus as a base, that model is around $1300 shipped. Now that's a 66" long kit, I'll assume a built-up JK Nautilus is over $3-$8k. A built model over 4' long even with costs spread over the run each unit would run $3-4k range retail. They would have build each one for under $500 to get anywhere.
The MR Nautilus is not a realistic comparison. Those retailed around $500 with discounts they were going around $400. According to what I've seen around they produced 3400 units. Each time you up the size of the model and the cost, your potential customers drop. Added to that the other models out there diminishes the market even more. And a larger model is in a different class, I have a JK nautilus and it's a monster on space. Even storing it in it's box is a pain. Besides the number of accual (paying)customers for the model which I'll bet is way under 50. Which is why I say they are being optomistic. And keep in mind they say this is in development. They are most likey testing the waters on this one. Of course a whole lot of people say they want one, the accual number of people who will buy one would be under 10%. With the economy the way it is I wouldn't be surprised if it's more like 1%. |

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
My understanding is it will be in the price range of $2,000 - $2,500 only 500 of them, this isn't a bad price for such a finished model but since EFX is developed from Master Replicas, the replica could end up an open edition perhaps. Myself and Rich Allsmiller patterned the 50th Anniversary Official Walt Disney Productions Nautilus in 2003, they were retailed out as a Disneystore Arts and Collectibles exclusive at $250 dollars. There were only 1000 pieces produced and sold out in just four days. Unfortunately, the young Reps making the decisions for production used a inexpensive company for production under Disney as they didnt think there was a large market for the boat(Didn't even know what it was) and were all about saving money. The figurines had a few issues but sold out like hot cakes, but a lot of them were sold to collectors so many fans missed out. It is still to this day, the most accurate replica out in the public domain, and exclusive as being the only Nautilus made using the actual filming miniature information and not the Disney plans. Here's a big statement of fact. Typically, any boat made using the Disney Plans is tall and squished like a pregnant guppy. The effects miniature is very sleek compared to it. I did that article by the way on Disneysub Nautilus replica history, though some of what I originally wrote got messed up when published to the web page.

Re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
Hello Will,
Great to hear you worked on the Walt Disney 50th anniversay Nautilus, here's mine proudly displayed in my prop room, I purchased two back in 2003 sold the 2nd one for over $1200 only a week after. So your saying that the Walt Disney version is overall more accurate than any other replica out there? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() GFollano Last edited by GF; 07-16-2010 at 04:24 PM. |

Re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
short answer is yes, it is the most accurate ever to date licensed Disney Nautilus. We used years and years of research and measurements on the original filming miniature to make the patterns for the 50th, not using Disney plans to make it but our own collaborated information of the original Nautilus brass miniature.
Still, I gotta say for the money, that this EFX boat is gorgeous and WAY worth the money...a lit, fully detailed salon, wheelhouse, and finished put it on your shelf model of four feet, should be more like 4 grand, at least. Will |

Re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
As I understand it, the EFX Nautilus replica replicates the 11 ft. filming model from the mid-point down, while the upper deck and details reflect the full scale sets. Basically they decided to pick the best features that each had to offer and incorporate them into this model. I'm happy with that decision, so I'll be picking one up.

Re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
Tony, not bad...that's almost a direct quote from the Disney store 50th Anniversary Nautilus figurine story card and CFQ article..the efx boat isn't though..quickly rakers are 11 foot style as are the main viewports, not sure what the salon blister is from though... and the arch is not large enough for the wheelhouse for a full size deckset. The wheelhouse panels and general shape seem to replicate the 30.5" model done for both Icons and MR...while not a "Hero"..it represents Scott's best boat yet, bar none
