EFX Nautilus in the works...
A Disney web site noted that EFX is working on a licensed 4 foot model of the Nautilus scheduled to come out in 2010. The model will have the salon included as well working interior and exterior lighting! Woohoo, looking forward to this one:

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
"Produced by the nice folks at eFX Inc., this 1/45th scale model of the Nautilus has an almost insane level of detail. Because this collectible is four feet long, it can feature re-creations of Nemo’s plush salon as well as the wheelhouse. And did I mention that the finished version will have external & internal lighting? Now the bad news … While this limited-edition collectible will be on display in Booth 2913 E at Comic-Con International later this month as well as at the first-ever D23 Expo (which will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center September 10th – 13th), eFX Inc. doesn’t actually expect to ship any Nautili until some time in early 2010."

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
I'm basing my opinion on the photograph provided on the EFX site. They claim it is super accurate, I know it's not. I've been documenting the original FX filming miniature for many, many, years... hands on.I was part of the restoration team that restored her more recently, I do know the boat very well, this claim made, isn't true. It's a "plans" boat, I can see this very quickly by it's general shape.

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
I'm not gonna list out everything, but here's a bit of it.. wheelhouse too high and wrong angles, also too thick at back, alligator eyes, salon housing, arch, rakers, side keels, bottom front keel, bottom rear keel, scupper apron, and the primary hull itself.

Hell, I like it! Looks like the Nautilus to me!
Since I never really examined it bolt for bolt, it's a 'mind's eye' thing for me. Last edited by Rylo; 07-12-2009 at 02:56 AM. |

Well, that's just wonderful.
What good does it do this thread, except to shoot down the EFX, if no knowledge is imparted to inform us of the specific differences? We really don't need another "I know but I can't tell you" thread. |

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
Well, my understanding of the ship is that there simply are differences between the different shooting miniatures and the full size set pieces. So to declare it wrong is sort of relative. So if you want to shoot it down with that kind of talk, it would be nice to hear the specifics and not a vague listing.

Is this the 4 footer that Brodeen was making for Drydocks, repackaged for EFx?

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
Howdy Micdavis,
I listed some on the bottom of the first page. There are prying eyes on this board of someone who would take my researched information to use for their private gain, already claiming they know everything about the boat. I've been researching the film miniature hands on since 1995, the Disney Nautilus is my area of expertise, my material world revolves around it pretty much. I only know three other people that know the Nautilus like myself, my model buddy Rich is the "main man" though, and of course Tom Scherman who passed in 95'. Rich and I have done tons of research and documenting of her together he also headed up the small restoration team after I found, "saved" the boat from being lost forever. While I think it's great that a company such as EFX is making a boat to sell and wish them well, I do take issue with them claiming it to be accurate if it's so darn obvious it's not. |

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
Micdavis,
Thank you for your understanding. Moffeaton, I think It may be the four footer, I'm not saying for sure, but there are definitly tells shown in the EFX photo that would prove it is. Cirrusx1, you have a 4 footer? CR didn't offer these yet to my knowledge, there were to be remolds for any kind of production. I believe you have this confused with his larger 1/32 ish scale Nautilus |

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
Firefoxm31, I think you're seeing what we in the Lightsaber circles see with Star Wars replicas.
We're the nerds. We know the stuff back-to-front better then the 'experts' at the replica prop companies. But between license agreements, different versions of the actual props used for the same thing, realistic logistic and manufacturing concerns, and making a replica for 'the masses' and not for the super-specific insider, it is very hard to make anything that is 100% correct AND pleases everyone involved. Is this model the most accurate sub available ? No. Is it 100% accurate to the real prop ? No. Will being upset that Exf is saying it's the most accurate change anything (or get the language used to change) ? No. To 'joe public' collector it's the most accurate version available, and 'joe public' will buy most of the 500-1000 of them made. I just try to be happy that the things that I love are getting attention and bringing the love out to people who might have forgotten about them or bringing the prop, movie, or feeling I had to a whole new generation. |

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
They are going to need a lot luck to sell even 500. At about 4' long that's going to be very pricey, and the size will limit most collectors.
I know of at least 6 other versions(in a variety of scales, I have 3 of them) that have been available in very recent years(http://www.disneysub.com/history.html Lists all repros). It looks to me like they are going to have another x-wing scenario on their hands. These guys need to look at their market, the guys reproducing the Gerry Anderson SSM's only produce 200 units world wide. When it took them years to sell out 1500 Eagles(in good times). They only way they will get anywhere with these is if they can clear their production run to retailers, and let them worry about inventory. To add to their difficulties 20K isn't as big a market as SW or GA, I think these guys are way to optimistic. |

re: EFX Nautilus in the works...
I don't. Until MR announced more coming the Nautilus were selling at over a grand. A more than 200% mark up from the original price. The prices dropped as more were suppose to be produced along with the economy tanking. But those with disposable income will still buy. Most important, this is a Disney collectible, which has a strong following and is a strength in itself. It may start slow if the price is high, but they will sell.
