    Jun 26, 2012 - DR Who-Sonic Design Competition (winners announced) #1

Have you ever wanted to have your unique and personal Sonic design come to life at no cost? What about the design manufacturing drawings supplied as well with your sonic to complete the display? Well here is your chance to have exactly that.

Prop Engineering.com.au with permission of therpf.com are running a "Design a Dr Who Sonic" competition on therpf.com, and closes on the 1st of August with the winner been announced on therpf.com and on youtube on the 8th of August 2012.

    3. Must be unique in design and in appearance to any other contestant’s entry.
    4. Entrants may only summit one sonic design.
    5. The concept art drawing must have no less than 4 dimensional specifications on the drawing.
    6. Your submission must be posted in this thread before August 1st, 2012.
    7. Summiting or posting of any drawing or art not directly relating to the Dr Who Sonic competition, will be removed from the competition thread by the moderators of thrpf.com
    8. You must be a member of therpf.com

There will be THREE prizes awarded to the top sonic designs

FIRST PLACE: The winning sonic design will be a prototype manufactured by Rassilon s/n 00 to the winner’s dimensional specifications, and mounted in a display, with a brass nameplate located at the base of the display. Yet to be designed. They will also get workshop manufacturing drawings to there design, on A3 paper. To make the winning sonic a reality may involve some slight changes to the design. Rassilon will work with the winner to produce something as true as possible to the drawing.
    Value: $1,000

SECOND PLACE: The first runner up will receive a Human Dalek Tommy Gun built by Rassilon to the specifications of Catfoodrob's pdf designs.
    Value: $475

THIRD PLACE: The second runner up will receive a Rassilon assembly drawing of the TYJ design Tardis in 3D on A1 size paper.

    Forum Judges

    Rubbertoe
    Greatwazoo42
    RussRep

The above forum members judgements are final, and any competitors entering not following the rules, will be eliminated from this Dr Who Sonic competition.

    Contest Administrator
Orange_Blend will be the RPF representitive in this contest and will administrate it. Any questions you may have he will answer.

So get your Sonic designs posted and get into the Dr Who competition for a chance to win your very own hand build design sonic.

Contest Administrator reserve the right to change or modify the rules as he see fit, to best keep it on a level playing field for all contestants. If any changes are made they will be posted here with notification posted notifying of any verification to rules or conditions.

    NOTICE:
    1. There has been a change to the closing date, from the 1st of September will now be the 1st of August, this was changed for the reason that it is not drawn out, and also not clash with other competitions.

    2. Cyberman due to life commitments was not Abel to devote as much time as he would have liked to, so for that reason RussRep has stepped in to be the 3rd judge, I do thank Cyberman for his help, and now thank RussRep for his time.

Basically, give 4 dimensions so they know the basic size of it. Length, width, height, and then one more

    Hey Everyone!

I've been asked to be the administrator for this contest. Rassilon has a great idea here and is being VERY generous in his prize donation. Because he has such a close stake in which sonic gets chosen and how it's made he's decided to leave the administration stuff up to me so that there can be no accusations of bias or anything like that.

    SO!

We are working on possibly another prize or two as well as a few rule clarifications and then we'll get this sucker as a sticky.

Anyone already working on their entries don't worry, the contest isn't changing at all, so keep working. If anyone has any questions I'm your guy! Looking forward to seeing the entries!

Very interesting idea, be good to see how creative we can be.
I am guessing you will see some extremely good designs.

Right, now I need to find my inner artist so I can enter!

I, for one, am looking forward to watching everyone's creativity come to the fore. You guys know how driven I was when I found Teletran's custom sonic designs and had one made. That sort of entusiasm and need to bring something new and different about is a constant here on the RPF.

This is going to be a good contest.

For this design, does it need to be easily CNC-machinable? Ie., no freehand sculpted parts? Is there perhaps a link to what is NOT possible with CNC?

Personally I would try and keep your designs realistic. It would be nice to say that anything goes but obviously whether it's able to actually be made will have some bearing on the first prize winner. I'll ask Rassilon if there is anything specific to watch out for.

So the official answer is design whatever you think looks best for the competition. Rassilon will work with the first place winner to make their sonic a reality, there may have to be some slight modifications to do so.

A few updates that you'll notice in the first post!

We now have three prizes all generously donated by Rassilon! Also, this contest will now be ending on AUGUST 1, 2012.

Any questions please feel free to ask! Hope to have this as a sticky soon.

If it's not considered too impolite, might I ask why the ending date was pull back by a whole month? Might knock some of us busy folk or slow pokes out of the running now...........

Edit: Nevermind, I see the first posted was edited to explain the change......
Summer is pretty busy around here, I don't think a month is enough time for me, but look forward to seeing what those who do join in come up with.

Great contest, working on an idea.

How do we submit our entries?

edit: I re-read the rules and see that we are supposed to just post them in this thread. I asked because in a previous sonic design competition entries were posted anonymously to prevent bias.

As you are not directly an employee of a production company, and are a contractor not employed to design movie's or TV props for a business, and only handles DVD as you have indicated you may submit your design.

If on the other hand you did make props for a living and contracted to a movie or a TV production company then you would not be eligible.

Just drawings/renderings! Of course feel free to build what you draw but if you win first prize it gets built for you.

The thought was that since this is a contest for just drawings it would be alright. A pencil and paper can accompany you anywhere! I encourage everyone to give it a shot but of course understand if some think that a month is too short. In past, contests where you have to build full props have been only a month so hopefully this isn't too restricting to most members.

Previous contests have been judged by the general membership. In those cases bias was certainly a great concern. As this is a judged competition the risk of that is much lower. Rassilon as well as all of the three judges have been asked to keep their participation in the thread to a minimum to help avoid such accusations which is why I'm administrating.

If any judge or myself suspect that an entrant is trying to coerce a judge they will be removed from the contest. Don't do it folks!

    So here's a question:

Those of us who will be working in 3D/CAD software, should we add dimension lines to our beauty renders for the sake of including size in the judging, or is it understood that a 3D model comes equipped with all of the dimensions, and the winner must supply the entire file set at the end of the contest?

Seems nitpicky, I know, but as it's already come up, some clarification would be nice.

To be fair to people drawing who will have to include it in their pictures I would say yes, you have to include the minimum 4 dimensions in your drawing. How you display them is totally up to you.

Of course you can send all the dimensions to Rassilon if you win though.

Looks great! A nice evolution of the current sonic.

Even though you're already building one there's nothing holding you back from submitting a new one in the contest!

A little clarification on what we're looking for... In a word, it's creativity! When you post your picture please feel free to explain your design. Sell it to the judges! A hand drawn design with a great explanation of what led you to it or how it's operated could easily defeat a highly polished 3D rendering with no explanation. I've been told that if you want to give your dimensions in your explanation that will cover that requirement.

However, if you'd like to put them in your image that's great too. Here are a couple DEAD SIMPLE examples of how that could be done:

I'm sure you guys will come up with more creative ways to illustrate that. Feel free to make your images as elaborate or as simple as you like!
