The teeth on the thermal detonator sure look like they match up, and in the star wars universe, the device probably opens and closes... what do you think? Is there any reference of this?
Do any of the replicas that have been made do this?

They do not. The three lights in the center between the two shells actually protrude out far enough that it would be impossible to close the shells over them. And while the teeth certainly look like they match up, there are some areas that don't quite match that would have some areas still exposed, and others clashing into each other.
Plus it would look less spherical if you were to close the teeth together.
I know that the prop doesn't, but I'm wondering if in the star wars universe it does
I was trying to research it when I saw your post. I looked at wookiepedia and there was no mention of that sort of detail. I recently re-read Shadow of the Empire in which one one was activated and there was no such function. They have been used in Clone Wars and I do not remember seeing anything different from there as well.
It does.
The problem is when it does, everyone dies!

Zenix, I kind of see where you are coming from. You take the TD out of it's box, give it a click and it pops open (maybe to arm it, like a safety, like pulling the pin from a grenade, then flicking the switch is like letting the lever go)
The thing I find funny is that you can turn it off by switching it off. So a baddie throws one at you, you pick it up and just switch it off. With a grenade you can't just put the pin back in once you throw it.
Leia's thumb never leaves the slider/switch in ROTJ. Just moves it back and forth.
There could be a pressure sensor on the slider so that when it is released, the slider will no longer function (enemy can't pick up and slide off)??
