    Jun 26, 2010 - Doctor Who: Time Agent's Vortex Manipulator *SPOILER* #1

OK, so we're starting a new thread so as not to highjack anybody else's.

So let's get this thing started. I got my Samsung keyboard in the mail yesterday and the button is exactly 16 mm with the border included. there's a small logo on it, but the chromed piece comes out and it should be really easy to either buff that off or paint over it without damaging the chrome.

It also looks like Jack's (or more likely a very similar) VM appears in The Big Bang, so here's a grab of it.

There's a much clearer shot of it a couple frames later, but VLC is a worthless piece of **** and it doesn't support frame by frame. I'll try to grab a better frame later. Basically it looks like a much easier job than Jacks because the cover flap has been removed. It also makes it very obvious that the flap was attached by snaps and not rivets and OFF the main body piece containing the manipulator. The manipulator itself has black buttons and what might actually be a screen instead of the brass grill, but I can't tell for sure.

Maybe I'm being uptight, but can we add "*SPOILER*" to the title of this thread? Some of us here in the states are on BBC America's time...

I'm not familiar with previous uses of the prop, so I'm curious, is the centerpiece a found item?

    Got it.

Now, other reference of Vortex Manipulator's have a cover that snaps on. Is that present on this version? I see the snaps, but no cover.

"A Handsome young Time Agent" does not necessarily mean "Jack Harkness or John Hart" -- I imagine it could be any one of DOZENS of Time Agents.

Oh, ok, if they used Hart's manipulator prop that makes sense.

I'm not planning on copying one or the other, I just posted that picture because the episode was in HD and it's the second time we ever got a good look at the thing. Both of them look cool, but I'll be making Jack's. of course, it could easily be converted into this one by snapping off the cover flap.

Ah, cool! You always seem to have something awesome on the go. I love it when found items are part of the actual props used.

Will be watching this fo'sho'. Dan, if you need any help or anything, just throw a PM my way.

I did notice that the flap was removed too. Also, are the buttons black on Jack's VM too? I could have sworn they were silver.

As for it being a screen, I did notice that but I couldn't figure it out. I need to go back and re-watch it.

This VM along with a fez would be great props for a "The Big Bang" #11 cosplay costume.

I knew it. Could also mean that it actually isn't Jack's VM after all.

    Don't forget the mop.
I completely forgot about the mop. We had a mop and a brush used as props this season lol.

yep, it was great to see this prop being used again.....I'd love an accurate version of it, Jack's or John's. I bought the toy version in the hope that I could use the computer part and use real leather instead, but never got around to doing it. I had a local leather worker knock up the leather face/strap but was never 100% happy with it......

    Do you have any pictures?

I would have made one a long time ago if this was technically leather work, but it's all garment leather and much harder to work with.

I'm looking for the buckle now, shouldn't take long to find as it's pretty unique and the toy got it just about right.

Jack's buttons actually vary in color. In Journey's End, you can actually see that the silver paint has rubbed off onto the cover, leaving them black (With a speck or two of silver):

From this angle, you can also see that the top cover snaps on BOTH sides, which explains why River's VM had no cover at all. They just unsnapped the cover.

Yea, so it looks like they might actually be the same prop, or at least the one used on Torchwood might be a different one from that used on Who. The part that's still confusing me is the inside of the cover flap. At one point I thought it was just heavily embossed tooling leather, but that doesn't appear to be the case. It looks as thought there might actually be something between the two layers of leather giving it that shape. Anybody have any ideas?

Yeah, I do have some pictures somewhere...will have a look. If I can't find them, I'll take some more.

The leather worker did great work on it but just no luck tracking down the type of soft leather that would be suitable for this prop, plus he dyed the leather as dark as he could but with no joy, not comin close to the dark brown required but I was still happy with the final product....but continue to try to get a closer, more accurate version.......I'm off to work now, so will have a look for the pictures tomorrow and will post up
