Nice. I always check toy conventions to see whether this piece is coming. It gets so many requests, I figured it had to be next. It's also a good choice because I can think of at least three different versions they could do (as the DST Trek props usually show up as exclusive editions somewhere). They could do screen accurate as a regular release, the unlighted red button/silver bars ILM prototype with just a new phaser I faceplate and button, and the TNG version even more easily with a weathered paint app and faux leather wrap.

Now it's just a matter of when it might come out. Even after they debut a toy like this, DST can take years to get it to market. Love seeing the progress on it though.

Yep. Hope it has the 4 LEDS on top similar to the ST II Phasers w/ the red/green LED in the center that blinks 3 colors
(red, green, orange) and several phaser sound effects as well as a removable Type 1 on top, like the other DST phasers.

'course that's just a Coyle or a casting of one, but we know all about representative pre-production displays. :) Can't wait.

Nope, on one side you can see the screw hole plugs like Diamond is wont to do on these. It't probably a test shot in styrene.

the photos have changed since this thread has started - there was a pic of thier upcoming toy , which had screw hole covers

Here are the photos I've found online. Apologies to the original photographers whose work I plundered.

And this one shows enough of the top to reveal that the P1 is in Search For Spock configuration.

While I have one of Richards wonderful ST3 Phasers, I'm definitely going to have to add one of these into the collection. :)

point of reference for this comment -it is Per RAC's comment on the trigger design being copied from his work --

** edit **found it - post #50 on this page
http://www.therpf.com/f9/upcoming-diamond-select-trek-tek-203217/index2.html

-so then the trigger on mine was never a used style then im guessing ..... i know my p-1 was a prototype design never used on screen ( thanks RAC ) , and given his post in this thread , i now know that my trigger type wasnt screen used either , so i guess it must be a prototype design as well ? --- before the comments come -- i know its a crappy casting , thats how i got it , thanks for pointing that out - just would like to know more about its origins thats all

isnt that piece in greg jein's collection ?

and both of the photographs in the first post in this thread have the RAC trigger ( radio shack button ) that RAC discussed in another thread - not the one RAC pictured of the ones used in acutal screen used phasers , ( which i cant find that thread right now or i'd link it here ) so are they copies or originals ? im confused

Here is another little Tip bit.

The original studio Phaser Three had no tip lights…that part was dummy, the scuttlebutt was that way the Actor did not control when or how long the Phaser Fired…and that way the special effects shop could then control when and how long they added the firing effect…

Every second of added effect cost money…

I added the working tip light when I offered these to collectors and fans.

As for the early designs, a board game company offered an instruction manual to go with the game and they were given prototype pictures, the Phaser had no LEDs what so ever and had what we called the charging port on the side(s), I believe once these were shown to the studio they were asked to add the LEDs on top of the Phaser One..and perhaps asked to cover the ports so they added the side panels which went over them, they also added the horrible Green or Yellow square LED panels instead of a TV like screen to the Tricorder (again I believe to “Light them up” for the filming) and change the face of the communicator..…

Side note: the communicator was turned on by a small switch under the rim near the top on the right side.

And another side note, the Phaser Three trigger was a NCNO switch...one side was on until the trigger was pulled at which side one went off and side two went on..SO it could be hooked up either way just by how you plugged the Phaser One power to the switch...

SO one way the firing LEDs (four red lighted LEDs on top) Could have been ON all the time: like it was powering up or charging OR just a ready to fire lighting effect like a flash gun ready to flash light...and when Fired these LEDs would THEN go out...as the weapon is firing..

The OTHER way is the one we seem to see, they light up when the weapon IS firing...

Rich: Good info, make sure the Diamond Select guys get it...

From my files (base photo from Coyle):

t3-phaser-LEDpatterns.jpg

Note, the screenused props (even in TNG Final MIssion) have a big Philips' head screw through the rear of the p1.

There's also the issue of the yellow-orange square LED bar on top of the P1, which mysteriously shifts colors.

Video of the prop used in TNG Final Mission:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HixzlOxwJro

In addition to the raised midplate on the P1, the Final MIssion version also has the p1 on/off switch on the opposite side to the Trek III version.

In the episode you can only see the red LEDs lit in a very brief shot where Wesley is setting up the phaser to fire automatically. It's a wide angle camera shot and you can't really tell what the lights are doing. That auction clip is great though, I could actually count frames and determine how long the red LEDs were lit:

- an LED is on for 0.1 second
- OFF for 0.07 second
- repeats for the next LED
- at the end ALL are OFF for 0.24 sec and then the pattern repeats.

I would bet the Phaser one was not changed that it was a flame flip.

The square LED has both yellow and red LEDs

Also the orange/yellow display was not even.

AND that youtube is WRONG...First it has a bright Phaser One center plate, the real ones did not, second the square LED is green the real ones were red and yellow, third the firing LEDs are on a chase driver and fire from rear to front and these firing LEDs are turned on by the switch NOT the trigger he does not pull the trigger, and forth the switch IS on the wrong side and last the square LED which acted like a power crystal does NOT turn on with the power switch.
