Custom Pip-Boy 3000 for iPod Touch - Fallout 3

Re: Custom Pip-Boy 3000 for iPod Touch

I received the rest of the parts today. I think they rushed the build perhaps after having forgotten about the first order, when 1 of the 4 models was rejected. You can clearly that the piece on the left is not as fine as the first part that arrived. I think I polish it up though okay, it just take a bit more time and filler primer.
Fits together pretty well already. The left piece will ultimately be glued to the top piece. Your hand fits through the elbow side hole. Then the bottom piece attaches. This seemed like a logical way based on the bolt holes in the game model. I made 3 seperate pieces to ease the casting process.

Re: Custom Pip-Boy 3000 for iPod Touch

First 2 pieces have been molded and I proved once again, that I'm no master mold maker. The cast will need some clean up, but nothing to difficult that can't be fixed with some sanding.

Only one more piece to mold.

Re: Custom Pip-Boy 3000 for iPod Touch

The last part has been molded. I'm getting ready to paint now...

I've Glued part 01 to part 02. I'm cleaning up the casts with a bit of Milliput modeling putty. I've also, drilled various holes for stainless steel hardware, Volume Control, and LED lights. I'm going to need to find a different Volume Switch that is more shallow to allow for proper arm clearance inside the Pip-Boy.

More Pip-Boys coming soon...

This is just so incredibly cool. I think this is going to be my next project once I get some extra cash.

Thanks. I ordered a more shallow volume knob and the voice amp to boost the ipod today. I can't get access to the ipod port so I'm just going to use the audio jack and boost that up.

I also got my Pip-boy primed today. I really recommend that PlastiKote Spot Filler & Primer. Good its lacquer based, so similar to other spray paint I'm gonna use for the base coat.

I think cable might give you want you need in order to get audio out of the dock connector. Alternatively this one could give you audio out, and a way to give it a charge while its still contained in the pipboy.

I haven't messed with those cables too much, but I bet they could be cut and stripped down and then wired directly to the amplifier circuit.

I'm really loving your Pip-Boy! I would definitely buy one from you... maybe even a few. I'm trying to plan out a badass Halloween costume this year, and I think getting a few friends together and going as a group from Fallout would be AMAZING!

I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished product! Awesome stuff! :-D

Well, hit a wall on the electronics side. I built an amp similar to what Skruffy had used on his build. When I test fit the parts in side my pip-boy the circuit board shocked the metal shell of my iPod and damaged both the internal speaker and the audio coming out of the headphone jack. Basically bricked my iPod. Not good. I'm going to the apple store for a repair consultation. Needless to say, I do not recommend messing with electronics as an amateur.

Just wanted to give a heads up to others should they attempt the same.

Reference renderings and texture map for the paint job. I went for a green military style scheme to match the textures. I think the gold comes from the game engine color grading/lighting I guess.

My finished Painted Pip-Boy cast:

where did you go to get the 3d print done, and how much did it cost?
also could you get upload the 3d picture for me to download, that way i could make one too?

Zookone, you might want to update that junkyard link- it goes to the hacked site.

I know alot of people on here use shapeway. As far as getting one he has shut down his sale thread in the junkyard to move on to other projects. You might see if Skruffy is still doing his run. I have one of skruffys because my arm was too big for this one and I absolutely love it.

You can find skruffy's sale thread here:

awesome job what did you make the file in?

I modeled the Pip-boy using FormZ. I setup the low-res game model up for remodeling using 3ds Max.

I used Shapeways for the 3D print. I had a few other folks quotes, but shapeways came out on top.

Here's mine in-progress.
I need to severely mod the circular cuff, as it's simply too tight for my arm. I can just about get it on, but it's too far forward and cuts into my wrist at the base of my thumb...

Hoping a hacksaw and a hinge solve this problem!

How does everyone solve the problem of pressing the Home button on their iPod?
