Dec 28, 2009 - Constantine 'Holy Water Ampoule' ideas needed... #1

    ... or rather "requested."

I'm going to assume most here know what I'm referring to:

My question is this: I am about to build some of these for myself, & I'm wondering what type of liquid would be best to use so they will "last."

My plan is to make them air-tight (aside from a bubble of air-space inside), so I would like WHATEVER goes in there to [IDEALLY] not evaporate, spoil, mold, mildew, discolor, rot, morph, evolve, etc.

So I'm hoping for either a boatload of suggestions to mull over, or better yet, the same suggestion over & over that would be equal to some kind of known absolute about such things.

So what say you, RPF Collective?

    Thanks in advance...

Wasn't there a thread about this a couple years ago?

I think it was mostly about what do use as the grenade container, not the liquid to put inside it.

Glycerine looks great, is inexpensive and I don't think it ever goes bad. A little thicker than water though. Alcohol is closer to the right viscosity, but will evaporate if given even the slightest chance.

Why not just plain old water with a couple of drops of bleach?

Agreed. It was a cheap Christmas tree ornament globe, right?

At Hobby Lobby they have this material to make fake water for silk flower arrangments. You pour it like water, but after a few minutes, it sets up really thick. I haven't used the stuff myself, but I have heard that when it sets up, it's rather solid. I've also heard it's really easy to work with.

I read a few sites on how to make a snowglobes. They say to fill the globe almost to the top with distilled water, and then add a few drops of glycerin (or mineral oil, baby oil). Some even say to use the mineral/baby oil in place of the water... but this might not give the "water-like" consistency you're looking for. In that case, a mixture may be the best method.

Sorry to necro an older thread, but I am agreed, I think the best thing to use would in fact be distilled water with mineral oil.

As far as the ampule it's self. I would get outdoor decorative lights. They can be found in the proper size and shape all over, such as target, orchard, Wal-mart, home depot, all kinds of places. Those lights are made for exterior wear so the bulbs will be thicker and less fragile. Just remove the bulb guts carefully and there ya go.

Yep I would vote for distilled water as well
