    Feb 13, 2009 - Cheap alginate source? #1

Hey guys. Can anyone suggest a good, cheap source for alginate? I need to make molds of a few hands.

    Thanks!

Check your local hobby stores first. They sell hand molding kits.

Also, look locally for dental Supply places.

Wal-Mart sold a kit so you can make molds of your hand...might be expensive if you are making more than one..

I found a place online that sells 1lb bags of alginate powder for $9.99, but I don't know if that's a good price or not...

And I don't know how much I'll need to make a mold of my left hand, and one for my right hand (2 molds with 1 hand in each - not 1 mold with both hands in it).

I would think a lb. for each hand, if you do the dunk in a can method.

I saw a place that had 3 lbs. for $21.

    Let me go look

Cool... That's cheaper per pound! Guess I'll grab some of that. I'm just going to use cans or old bowls for the containers. No sense building mold boxes for this, really.

Become good friends with a Dentist.
Sometimes they get some in to test and if they find they can't use it they pitch it.

I got a tub of it from my Dentist.

Can't get any cheaper than that.

    PS.

Also if you need hemostats you can get them when ever you go for stitches.

They pitch all the tools they use on you when the stitch you up.
I got hemostats, scissors, and twizers the last time I cut my hand.
