Jun 25, 2008 - Calling all futuristic gun builders for Sony project #1

    Hey Gang,

As some of you may know, I run Sony PlayStation's Multimedia Dept. and we're doing some viral videos, web commercials and "behind the scenes" projects for an upcoming PS3 game (sorry, can't say which one). We are pitching a bunch of ideas, and one or two of them involves replicating a couple of the weapons from the game. I don't have a ton of cash (this isn't for a movie, so I don't get a huge budget), but we can negotiate.

I need the weapon(s) to be sturdy (they will get handled by actors) and look decent (there shouldn't be any extreme close-ups), but they don't have to custom CAD designed, CNC milled, and accurate down to the last screw with working electronics and moving parts.

The look is very similar to Alien:Resurrection guns. Very industrial, hard edges, no sculpted curves. I will obviously have pics of the new weapons once the concepts are approved. They could be made out of thick acrylic or wood and painted, whatever. I'd rather they not be made out of resin or something that can chip and break easily.

There ya have it. If you're interested, willing to sign a contract and non-disclosure agreement, and can deliver quality work on schedule, email me at gary@moviefxmag.com and send me some pics of your work.

    Thanks,

    Gary

    Sounds intriguing

Being the hack that I am, I consider my scratchbuilt gun results passable, but less than stellar...

What kind of time frame are you looking at? would a single, foam reinforced piece work for separate, individual handler shots? Can the weapon be "reality" based on a present day weapon (i.e., projectile munitions), or are you looking for a completely unknown, energy/beam weapon design?

    Hey Gang,

Sorry I haven't been on the board for awhile but for the last few weeks, I've been getting ready for the big E3 Videogame Tradeshow down in L.A. (Our busiest time of the year). I'm actually holed up in a small conference room at the Wilshire Grand hotel right now with a post production crew putting the finishing touches on all our videos for the press event on Tuesday morning.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I finally got around to returning some emails this morning. I believe I've found my propmaker for this particular project, and while he doesn't want to be named right now, he is an RPF member.

Again, thanks for all the responses and hopefully I can hire some of you for future projects.

    Thanks,

    Gary

I'm not particularly interested in the PS3 or the games, but it's good to know an RPF member will be making the props for this ad! Well done to said member.

    Patience, Chuckster! ;-)

The project will be done tomorrow, and once I can make the project public (hopefully in the next couple days), I will. I have about 150 extremely detailed pics showing every step of the weapons development. Here's what I can tell you:

    1) It's about 75% metal (CNC'd and stamped aluminum, brass, etc)
    2) It weighs 20+ lbs.
    3) It required 12 pages of engineered blueprints
    4) It has lots of lights and some sound

    Stay tuned!
