    Jul 20, 2012 - blaster with recoil .. built finally #1

does anyone know roughly the current or votage needed to power the kick back recoil feature of those old ps1 light guns?

im thinking of doing a custom blaster with that same recoil feature im gonna rip one out of a gun and use it but iv no idea of what current or voltage it would require to power the motor for the recoil

    anyone have an idea?
iv also no tools or any way to check it either

It should have something imprinted on the side as to voltage. If not take it apart and start looking. The other option is to use a voltmeter and have at it.

If that doesnt work simply hit an electronics surplus store and look at small motors that can be powered off a battery pack. If you get two motors side by side, one clockwise the other counterclockwise, that are activated by a momentary switch via the trigger...
That would also allow you the ability to power a single hi output red led in the barrel.

I have a recoil light gun for a PS2 (lots of these around as they don't work on flat screen LCD TV screens, only CRT so almost worthless).

It runs off USB from the PS2. I believe USB is 5 volts and 12 volts so chances are it would run on either 5 or 12 or somewhere in between.

How do the older ones work? Do they use a power pack or batteries or are they powered by the PS1?

You could design a simple one using a small motor with a cog, driving a toothed rod that is returned by a spring. Or a solenoid could give you a similar result, the solenoid pulls the bolt mechanism back and a spring returns it to the forward position. If you are tech savvy you can set up a contact system which cuts off the power allowing it to spring back on it's own.

that looks cool. I've just bought one myself to mod.

Any chance you could give an electronics novice some tips on how to wire the electronics for the recoil to work?

    thanks

hi ther thanks for the comments sorry for the late reply...

1st you will need a sound board best out there is probly the blastercore 4.0 from plecterlabs, thats what i used
you will need a battery prefferably a 7.2V rechargable lithium and some wireing
hot glue, epoxy glue... and lots of time for planning

ther was little mods to the plastic nothing major basically i was just creating as much room as possible within the gun shell for the electronics
basically just make sure thers a good clearance under the slider so it doesnt jam etc
i wired the recoil motor to the main LED flash of the blaster core so it gets all the features ...like it wont fire when the mag is empty etc,
i didnt use any blinkies as i wanted all the battery power for the recoil motor thers only 3 5mm leds in the barrel of the gun 2 yelow and one orange
timing was the hardest thing to get right, the timing of the recoil to the gun flash and sound fx all had to be in sync or it just wouldnt have worked i tinkerd with it for ages before i finaly found a sweet spot wher they all work seamlessly
heres a bunch of my pics

is there any way to get the recoil function working with a trigger pull without having to get a sound board/blaster core?

do you mean without using a sound board? if you do then sure you can do that you would just need to wire up the recoil motor to the trigger and a battery but it would be hard to get it to work correctly as the recoil would only work for as long as you held the trigger and probly wouldnt be very realistic

the blaster core has all the features to get it working the way you want because you can config settings in the configuration file

    Ok thanks
I'll see if I can get it working without blaster core. Don't think I can justify spending that sort of money on this
