    May 10, 2010 - Best 10th Doctor Sonic? #1

Hey, all. I was considering getting a 10th Doctor sonic, and I wanted to know which commercially available one you guys thought was the best. I'm looking for both lights and sounds, by the way.

Also, should I get the currently available 11th Doctor sonic, or wait until a better one is produced? In other words, is it "close enough"?

MFX was the best one, licensed and Neill is a member here, lights only. They are sold out but you may be able to get one on ebay

the CO toy is awesome I am going to get one myself at some point, for prop toy its a good option.

So if I'm looking for lights AND sound, along with "good enough", then I want the CO Sonic? I'm looking for something I can carry around with me and isn't mad expensive.

If "not mad expensive" is part of your criteria, go for the CO toy!

The remaining MFX's have been bought out by one place who decided to jack the price up.

If you're willing to spend a bit more money, Celestial Toystore make an Eccleston/Tennant model with lights and sound as well.

Thanks for the advice. I had to order a birthday present for a friend from Thinkgeek, so I went ahead and got the CO 10th and 11th screwdrivers at the same time. They should be here soon and I can promptly start running around with them after that!

CT is a banned member here FYI for inappropriate behavior and baiting, I would steer clear of him and his products. Just an FYI

I had heard that, so I initially didn't mention him in my post, but I have yet to hear of anyone who didn't love the sonic they got from him (Aside from the fact that the sound is a tad quiet), so I decided why not.

Sometimes you have to separate the person from their product, but it's good you mentioned the issues with him so that other people can make a more informed decision about purchasing CT's products.

From what I've seen of his product it's not all its cracked up to be. And everything else already mentioned.

For something you can carry around, definitely go with the CO. It's not terribly expensive and has light and sound.

I'd say the CO 11th Doctor sonic is quite good as a 'close-enough' thing to have if you're going for one of those. However, mine had the sound die on me within 5 minutes, and I hear that the sound dying is a common problem (which I hate, because the CO 11th Doctor sonic has the most accurate sound effects of any of their sonic replicas).

As for an absolute best 10th Doctor sonic, I've seen the MFX and Celestial Toystore versions in person and firmly believe that the Celestial Toystore sonic is the all-around best out there. It has sound, which makes things very nice, and nearly all of its features are dead-on accurate to the prop used in seasons 1-2 of the new series (it does have a narrower slider slot than the original, however). All it's cracked up to be in my opinion, and all of my dealings with CT have been positive.

The MFX sonic, a replica of the season 3-4 prop, is a good replica, but it is extremely expensive now and lacks sound. I do also have to say that its look is less imposing than the original prop thanks to the cumulative effect of several minor dimensional inaccuracies in the emitter head and end cap.

Really depends on your personal preferences in the end, though.

(Full disclaimer - I own a CT sonic!)

    Definitely agree with this 100%.

I've nothing against the MFX sonic, and in isolation it's a good piece. However, when compared directly "hand in hand", the Celestial Toystores version is in a league of its own.

When MFX started to knock out their sonics at the reduced price, I did briefly consider buying one to complement my CT sonic, but when I compared my CT sonic to a friends MFX, I decided to wait for CTs Series 3/4 sonic.

    Regards,

    Dave

I'm not an expert on all variations of the RTD era sonics, were the slider buttons ever as big on a screenused as the CT screwdriver?

    How's the sound?

I have an MFX, which I love, but the idea of one with sound is appealing.

    .
The slider buttons on the Ecclestone hero sonic were large like the CT version, but sat in the slot because it was huge. The first season prop would have been the nicest if it wasn't for that enormous slot.

The quality of the sound on the CT version is good, however it is relatively quiet as others have said.

I'd say, if you are satisfied with sound around 1/2-3/4 as loud as the CO toy, you'll thoroughly enjoy the CT sonic's sound.

I'm guessing you aren't still looking, but for any who read this that ARE looking...I researched for months while I was saving to get a sonic. I Googled every image I could find, read every post I could find, each & every review, & all posted opinions on both makers. After being fed up with the politics of "We're blind to all faults because he's our friend", & the hate & ire directed to one VERY opinionated individual, I decided to base my purchase on the prop itself.

I do not admire or play with props with a set of digital calipers. I DO love to compare it with what's on-screen. I'm a fan & what I now own has been more than I could have ever hoped for.

I got CT's, plain & simple. It's the best looking, as accurate as you can ever want, & has sound. It is quieter than the toy, but the sound is louder when extended.

You can also not ask for better customer service. To give you an idea, I ordered my sonic the day before the Chinese New Year. The posts close there for an extended amount of time & CT wasn't going to be working for 2 weeks. He made a special trip for me & I had my sonic in 3 DAYS. From China !

Bottom line, don't take the "inappropriate behavior" comments at face value. As far as non-licensed goes, it is true. I also dare you to find a member that cries foul on this issue in regards to CT that DOESN'T own an unlicensed prop. Base you purchase on the prop & the prop alone.

Lots of kettles here man, but I love the info & discussion here. I learn more & more every day. I usually don't pipe up in cases like this, but I feel my experience & opinion is as valid as anyone elses.
