    Oct 24, 2007 - Beowulf drinking horn w/pic #1

Got a copy of The Art of Beowulf, and, alas, while there's tons of art, there are very few actual pix from the upcoming film. Best of the few is this beauty of Hrothgar's drinking horn. It'll never replace my martini glass, but I think it's pretty sweet.
    Cheers!

Much of it clearly is CG, but some of it has to be real, costumes, etc.

    The entire production is CG.

Did they scan real props or something? That's a mighty fine-looking mug!

Probably it was used as reference for the CG model (shape, materials...), or maybe it could have been scanned for the movie...

It was filmed live, and then using that footage made into CG.

Kind of like A Scanner Darkley but 3D.

So yeah, there are real props and costumes. Also lots of codachrome.

Hmmm... A new way to waste money!

    Are you sure about it?
I think they are using just a new mocap system... That's all...

But, if this is true... It's a giant, useless, step for digital animation!

Thats what I gathered from the presentation at Comic-Con.

They filmed it on a blue/green screen, then took that video and made 3D models of the actors and put in the digital fx.
So to me it sounded like a 3D version of Scanner Darkley (except in that one, they auctally filmed on set. I'm sure Beowulf was done with codachrome)

Though I will say the coolest thing for me is that they're releasing it in 6 different formats.
    Real IMAX 3D say what?!

Just saw the movie. Interestingly, the cup is a LOT more detailed than that... though the one pictured might have been the one held by the actors, and later animated over.

Even Beowulf is cgi. The actor is fifty and fat, but they made him younger, muscular, and taller.

They say Christian Bale is thinner for Dark Knight. Why lift weights when you can be cgi-ed afterwards?
