Apr 24, 2007 - ANH Obi Saber assembly using Chen's "motorcycle grip" #1

So, I have a Roman sink knob, Serafino "gear", Real graflex clamp with Roman's spacer, Chen "motorcycle grip", and soon to have the UBER-Accurate Serafino emitter. The Chen grip looks to have an odd threading to it, can anyone here tell me how they have assembled their saber with his grip??

What do you mean with "odd threading" ? I have never seen a Chen "grip" in real life, but I had supposed that it was accurate to the real thing.

On a real assembly, the "disc" part of the brass stem should screw into the steel "grip". The other side of the "grip" should be identically tapped also. The "grip" should be hollow, 1 1/8" in diameter. The stem should be tapped 7/16 UNF at the very top but a 3/8" threaded rod should fit right through.
I suppose most people attach everything around a 3/8" threaded rod.

On the original grenade I had years ago this was the case as well, but as you can see the chen grenade compromised that a bit:

Also, the threading seems very weak on the brass stem closest to the handgrip section. The threading is more defined on the other end where you would attatch the emitter, but as you can see it doesn't go all the way through.

Now, I know that Chen sold quite a few of these "grips" :P

Anyone have info on the assembly using one of these?

The part to the right of the clamp is the spacer I cut out of a 1.5" faucet pipe. I did it with a dremel kind of fast so it's not super smooth, but it works just fine because it's level.

I left the threads on the spacer because I didn't feel like cutting both sides. If I can get a saw, I'll probably cut another piece so that only smooth metal show through the clamp holes.

This is a photo of where the spacer would be placed and how it keeps the booster and grenade separated.

Here is a close up of the inside of the clamp with the spacer already inside of it.

Here's what it looks like with the rod going through all the pieces. I left the spacer hang out on the left side just for the photo.

Everything is fitted like it should be and this much of the thread will be used to attach the emmiter.

All screwed together and ready to go. Here is the tip with the brass nut I used.

Here is a shot inside the back of the booster.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks FB! He really did a bang-up job weathering this thing, I could not be happier with the look of it and I won't be changing it at all

I was also going to ask, does anyone know if the saber in the Tunasia shots (the one on Obi's belt with BOTH transistors/washers in the clamp) has all of the add-on wires that seemingly help hold it together?

I have a grenade that the stem threads in to the "grip" So does that mean its a real grenade? Is that what I read correctly? Pictures here....http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...fit/anh014.jpg

It might be a real grenade, but it also might be one of the brass cat grenades that were made a couple of years ago. The stem and windvain you posted look like that to me.

    Franz Bolo,
What's the width/diameter of the disk added part on the booster?
I think I need to make one.
    Thanks

Are you talking about the ring of holes with the hex nut on it? If so, it fits in the clamp exactly. So it's the same diameter of a graflex.

    Sniff sniff........boo hoo

The threaded inner section of the wind vane is M10 - and I acheived that simply by threading a steel M10 rod in to the soft brass.

Give my old baby a loving home...so much work went in to the look of that

An M10?! M10!! What the heck is an M10? Leave it to one of you crazy folks from across the pond to use something uncommon here in normal-ville!

Ok, seriously though, is there going to be an easy way for me to assemble this whole thing now.....anyone have any suggestions?

Did you see my post! Duh!!

Just kdding, the threaded rod I used doesn't even thread into the grenade threads. It's a pressure fit when you tighten the nut down.

I think those were added along the way. Here's the pics that serafino posted way back when that do not have the wires...

If you are using a threaded rod, you can get a welder’s T-nut for inside the emitter, you can cut it short and then used it flat side up to make a ‘reflector’ sort of look. Regular steel is easier to cut than stainless, but even then you may need to clean up the threads a bit once you cut it down.

Any future emitters will hopefully have attachment options included. My own preference would be for something which does not obstruct the hole in the stem, so I’d like to get away from threaded rod construction at the emitter.
