I agree, it seems there's not many newer legendary actors around anymore. Or not many around now that seem able to match their epic predecessors for some reason.

If we're lucky, someday picking the best actors will probably end up being a reality based TV show of some sort.. But if they were gonna do that they could have at least held off on using the name American Idol already.

Having read all 50 pages of this thread over a few days, I've become conditioned to think there were dozens of updates every day. Now seeing it in real time I'm getting too anxious.

I know with all the variables, it's probably impossible to guess a price range for these parts, correct?

We hope to post some availability and cost - thoughts shortly. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we may have the bulk of the parts prototypes complete in a few weeks.

    ...cross yours too!

Mega tomorrow! ... but I think we will be ...affordable.

Brought this up in my own thread about Denix conversion, but this is THE thread and will get more traffic, so...

I'd like to get repro Mauser wood grips for my Denix that are the correct size and alter the Denix frame to match the grips. Mara Jade's Father kindly directed me to these repro grips.

C96 Broomhandle Mauser Bolo Plain Grip 20 Lines

Color looks good, but I questioned the accuracy. These grips have 20 engraved lines. The grips on the hero prop appear to have about 30 and my Denix has 30. These look more accurate for an extra $20, but the color looks too dark.

    Grips, 1896, Walnut Military - w/o Red 9, Includes Escutcheons & Screw

I found yet another set which looks perfect, but WOAH, $110 + shipping if I purchase the hardware?

    Gun Grip - MAUSER BROOMHANDLE

So, opinions on repro DL-44 grips? My current thinking would be to get the "too dark" set and see what they look like in person. The hero prop grips look lighter than these, but the pic on the website may not be accurate. And, if they are too dark, I could always bleach them a bit lighter and stain them.

I'd really like to hear thoughts on this. I know many of you have dealt with these issues already. What did you decide to do?

The first grips are bolo grips, so those probably won't do for your Denix unfortunately.

The Dark ones look decent enough for the price. And being walnut they might not be quite that dark in person. Or it could be just stained dark instead, which will come off for the most part with sanding. Plus those come with hardware too.

The 3rd set looks great but doesn't include hardware, and might be a hefty price for a Denix upgrade.

I'd say either keep checking around, or give the darker grips a try. Also somewhere in this thread are a couple links somebody posted for a Denix that comes readily with wood grips, just in case you didn't notice.

Yeah, my Denix HAS wood grips. But, the wrong size of the frame and grips is the issue. I want to accurize this as much as I can afford and since I couldn't find an MGC replica, I'm bound to make the Denix as accurate as I can.

I agree that the $50 grips are probably the best bet. Then rework the frame to match.

I used my Denix wood grips and reshaped them along with the frame. The Denix frame does not have enough room between the trigger guard and handle so I dremeled it back with a medium sanding drum and the re shaped the grip to blend. Of course the lines need to be put back on the rounded areas but it was easy enough to do with a small triangle file.

Depending on you level of modeling abilities this is not too tough. may be worth a try if you are going to junk them anyway and get replacements.

Chances are you will need to reshape whatever you buy anyway since the grips are not made for a Denix and the grip shape is different. Easier to reshape the wood grips and remove material than have to add to the metal frame. (but you can add to the Denix with Plumbing soldier)

You will need to check if there is enough material on the new grips to cover the Denix frame, which is why I stuck with the Denix wood grips.

I also sanded off the finish overall with a foam sanding block.
The color will be easy to redo with a little stain to get any finish you want. Use a one step color/poly and just build up the depth of the color you want with light coats. You can then beat them up to weather them if you like.

I can post more if you want to know details.

forgot to mention, you will need to replace the self threaded screws in the grip.

Just drill out the frame screw hole and add these:

    Replacement Grip Screw Escutcheon Set

You can use some epoxy to center if needed.

Ordered the $50 grips I linked to above. They come with the screw/escutcheon set. I'll follow this tutorial.

    New Page 1

Seems easy enough depending on how the grips sit on the frame. Lots of Dremel work ahead.

just some thoughts while we await more parts... hopefully Friday!

On the subject of who shot whom first.

    Note blast.

    obvious Photoshop tampering.

is this the face of an innocent man?

Evidence of behavior. Is this profiling or good police work?

seems he has a habit of striking first!

    more proof...

    note mutual lack of remorse.

author seems to corroborate the evidence. His T shirt is his confession, I think.
    Thoughts?

..Sounds like that would make a pretty good episode of unsolved mysteries!

Ever since the special editions were released, that scene was re-edited to make Greedo shoot before Han. But I never understood why that debate started to begin with because in the Original release of SW, Han is the only one that shoots!

    Han shot first - YouTube

In my opinion the original releases are the real Masterpieces, but I guess who shot first just boils down to a debate based on which version of the film each debater like most.

...it seems Lucas is insisting that Han did not shoot first which is why he re-edited it. His argument is lame. He thinks kids should not think Han is cold blooded enough to shoot first. What he failed to realize is that Han simply was faster, just like the old west. He knew Greedo was about to pull the trigger and beat him to it. Simple.

This was undoubtedly the original idea. What he should have done in a re-edit was to have Han Shoot Greedo and have Greedos shot miss...as he dies, just like an old western. (feel free to re-re-re edit George)

In Lucas' version it seems the great bounty hunter Greedo is even a worse shot than Han. Point blank miss! Just seems stupid to me.

Oh well.. a few more years and we will be looking at a ReBoot of the entire series no doubt!

I think the fact that Lucas thought he needed to "clarify" this moment in the film is a joke. Trying to make a rogue smuggler more family friendly? Come on! That was a character defining moment for Han and it was great. It also shows the world he lived in as a dangerous place and the lengths he would go. Then the character is allowed to grow once he encounters Luke, Leia and the rebellion. He becomes the more caring person through the course of the films. His journey is a bit longer and more meaningful if you allow him to start by shooting first rather than just being lucky and reacting to a really bad shot.

I actually don't think Greedo was ever going to shoot. Greedo was going to see if Han would pay him off and if not he was going to drag him off to Jabba for the reward. If Greedo wanted him dead he wouldn't have tried to shake Han down.

Also I think it is more telling that Han would rather kill than be captured - not just self defense - it resonates more with his character and how he changes to be selfless. Han wasn't like Luke or Obi Wan that would kill when push came to shove or to protect themselves. He was borderline criminal and that's what made his character great.

Agreed, my gut feeling while watching has always been that Han's shot was a surprise to Greedo.

Back on topic, for someone who knows nothing of guns, can anyone describe how the scopes (for ANH or even esb.jedi) were mounted on the sides of these mausers? I get there's a specific bracket but I feel like I'm missing a lot of detail..
    Thanks!

...you have to remember that these mounts were jury-rigged onto the Mausers. The mounts used in SW were not production Mauser C96 mounts and were simply bolted and screwed, and glued onto the frames.

The Hero ANH mount that was also used in Sitting Target was a custom or limited production piece mounted on the left. (at least we think it was custom since no one can find another like it)

When they used it for SW, it was just bolted on with those two side mount thumb screws and crossbar. A short threaded rod was threaded and screwed (maybe welded/silver-soldiered) to the frame receiver, then two disk spacers, then the crossbar then the two thumbscrews to hold it all tight to the frame. The T mount slides over the dovetail on the crossbar and is tightened by the center thumbscrew. Viola !

Some others here have a long history and knowledge of the parts such as Chris (lonepidgeon) from Parts of Star Wars and has described the way it came about.
