ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Does anyone know anything about the UK show "The Protectors". Seems the NR SW may have been used in the show.

...Speaking of the Grill, now that you mention it, Has it ever bothered anyone else that the Grill doesn't seem quite straight, like it has been depicted in all the models and images. I know it is most likely plastic and sloppily applied on the HERO with residue and all, but if you look real close, and straighten out the pics and make then as square as possible, you will notice that the Grill fins are not straight even, parallel rings at all.

As discovered by participants of this thread a little while back and never before depicted on any MR or replica blaseters, the bottom fin of the grill is cut off in the front to allow it to fit over the Mag bump at the bottom of the frame.

In addition, I would like to propose that the entire grill, is not made up of straight even rings as on the MR, but that the top 1/3 set of rings is actually tapered back, being smaller at the top, which some others RPF members have noted.

I propose that that the CENTER and LOWER section ring sets are vertically flipped versions of the TOP section and taper down from larger to smaller as shown in the drawings below. I know it has been said that the parts were from a model plane engine etc. ant put together like this.

The only real point I am making is that I don't think the rings are straight, but are tapered as shown below.

(unless this has been discussed and found before in which case... never mind)

I kept checking because they just don't look straight in the HERO shot and actually look like the grill bulges in the middle but this is due to the overall OD lines at the heave joining rings I think.

Just thought I'd through a little monkey in the wrench for you guys to ponder.

I had noticed that the grill was made up of three parts but I hadn't noticed one was flipped upside down. Well spotted, guys.

Lonepigeon, does the fin size and spacing match the Merr Sonn parts?

These parts look like they could be the same.

I can't quite rationalize the ring fins which look very regular on the ANH HERO and on the Merr Sonn until you line it up.

The profile of the fins don't look it... but could these be threads of some sort?

It is hard to visualize the twist of threads if there is any but look at the area where the rings come together.

I'm confused.

No, they're definitely not threads. The rings/fins are all parallel. They're just warped in that area. Maybe a felxible plastic or just damaged.

I see your point the fins to the left are all kinda bent to the right.

so if the longer - straighter section was available as seen in the middle section of the Merr-Sonn... why didn't they use it on the Solo HERO. The sections are defiantly separated by those other thicker rings.

When I was at MR, Jason Joyner, who owns a number of original SW props, told me that they are "plumbing adapter" parts that are stacked together to make the longer pieces we see.

He said the fins are soft plastic to fit into the ID of pipes.

I am not saying that is right or wrong, so don't attack me. I am just passing on what I was told. FYI.

Very well could be former Qmx steve. Wish we could find some, although I personally don't want it on my model, but would be great to know the accurate size.

Very nice observation Pat! It certainly appears to be two larger tapered pieces with a smaller, more tapered piece on top as you show. I remember it being brought up a long time ago about it being 3 pieces, but I never realized the taper to the lower pieces.

I think the threaded look to it may just be because the lower pieces are tapered and the bottom piece is tipped to where it looks untapered, leaving the fins angled kinda like threading.

Yes, they are not threads. The bottom one is just slanted.

I am of course assuming that it's the same piece that's on the Merr Sonn. As you can see, those are definitely not threads. And they are not pointed fins either but square cut and flat on top.

It's an odd looking plumbing piece that's for sure!

Now that I look at the Merr Son's grill pieces, I do see a possible slant to those fins as well. The bottom edge of the small un-finned area doesn't match the fins angle. Hard to say for sure, the bottom could of just been cut off crooked or something instead.

Wow Kurty! That is a much nicer shot than I had to work with! Do you have the whole section? Whole pic? Any other shots including these elements?

Really good discussion. You can see how flat the fins are from that shot.

The lower piece may indeed have been just cut anf=d glued sloppy and at an angle. That fuzzy pic makes it hard to tell. Anyone have any better?

Now what to do. If it is agreed that the HERO has these tapered parts as depicted, how do we feel about that? Do you all agree that the HERO, forgeting what it really is and going just by what it looks like, has the TOP section tapered towards the top and the center and bottom section tapered toward the bottom?

Looks like Deadbolt has his work cut out for him.

The size, funny enough is just about the diameter of the booster or the diameter to fit just inside the FH.

going off of Carsons lead - Still not quite right. Only problem here is the profile of the fins... maybe in 1977 they were blunt on the edge.

note the angled rings like the hero I posted. curious.

Even closer, nice job! I still haven't found a match yet either. I could definitely see the ANH prop guys having a box of something like this laying around, considering their reputation for using common pieces like this one.
