Wow, this project is really flying along. Of course it's still early days but it's great to see you going about it with so much planing and forward thinking. Funny to see the Chev V's Ford topic pop up for a few posts. hahaha petrol heads!

There really hasn't been a car since the 89 thats made such an impact (fast and furious cars ). IMHO the tumbler is a bit naff.
Anyway very cool work and cheers for posting the videos too.

    5. The craziest part, by NEXT FRIDAY we plan to have the shell on top of the chassis. It won't be mounted or ready to drive or anything, but it will be in place and I can start working on the mounting posts and building out the cokpit.
    The Project Workbench
Holy smokes!! I'll be on the edge of my seat for that video update Matt!!

    Great work!!

I broke out ye olde spray gun tonight and did the first coat of heavy build primer on a few parts I've been sanding lately. DEFINITELY slow going, but progress nonetheless.

And the garage smells of hell.

Matt, if you have the chassis drivable and the body not on yet(if I'm following the thread correctly) I'd recommend getting on a seat belt, and driving it like mad. drive it as much as possible. Get the insurance plates, reg. if you have to. but drive it. this makes sure that while everthing is easy to access, you will see if anything is loose, or leaking, needs to be adjusted etc. if it shakes at Xmph. make sure the U joints are phased properly. Stuff like that. Of course you may be way ahead of me, not sure.
On the priming and sanding(again just in case u haven't tried this). Try a porter cable orbital sander. use about 40grit sticky. and wear a RESPIRATOR. Not a dust mask. But having said that, the oribital sanders tend not to throw dust nearly as bad as other sanders. also great for a nice even sand. avoid belt sanders. Other sanders tend to do nothing, or not much. this is a just in case you haven't comment.

Doody's right -orbital is the way to go...I use #36 grit cuts even faster.
I don't know if your bodyshell has box tubing pre glassed in it but you may want to do that now before you attempt the mount - layers of 6- 12ozcloth and resin is good to laminate 1"tubing in and easy to work with..or you could use the two part epoxy bond..much less of the HellSmell

Not quite there yet, though that's definitely a good idea. It's going to depend entirely on how the project pipelines itself. And yes, always a respirator!

I have an orbital sander, and it's been getting a good workout. Good stuff.

DonC, thanks for the insight on infrastructure. I had stuff like that planned, but I will incorporate some of your comments into the build. thanks again

So far today has been body work. Just working on the gas cap inserts, and cleaning up one of the seams. Just working it all out little by little, getting familiar with the materials and tools, etc.

I feel so unworthy commenting on this, but I have been following and it's amazing. It's so cool that you have the resources to really make this dream come true.

Matt, awesome progress, as usual. It looks like Bo has turned out to be a godsend...and a really good sport, to boot.

This thread has inspired me to start restoring my dad's first gen Camaro...not a Batmobile, but a good project nonetheless. It's amazing how much you learn along the way when you start a big project like a car build.

Tim, if you ever need any help with your car... bo is available!!!
Best of luck with your restoration sir! I hope it finds its way into a thread here on the board. As you say, I"m sure there's a ton of knowledge and experience that could be gained by fellow car enthusiasts here, including myself.

Jheilman, thanks! It's been a long time coming, and without joking, this has been in the back of my mind for 23 years. Even more so for the past 8. It's something I've been steadily working towards for years and years, and it STILL does not get old when I walk into the garage and see it there in front of me

Thanks, man. Chevyhotrod has been hugely helpful via PM, and I've been chipping away at the rust a bit at a time. I'm actually going to need somebody that can do good sheet metal and welding work, so if Bo has an East-Coast clone, I'm hiring him.

Anyway, don't want to derail the awesome train of the MattMobile. Looking forward to seeing the shell on the chassis!

I got in a couple of hours of body work yesterday. I'm patching up the really big gaps and mis-keyed parts of the body right now. I'm also still working on the gas cap, and the seam to the left of it. Just a lot of sanding, puttying, and primering. Not much fun, but so much to do. I don't want to get too deep into it before mounting the body, but it's a productive way to pass the time while I await Bo's return.

I've also been working on editing together my interview with Keith Carter, which is a great companion piece to the interview with Abby Dark Star. If you haven't seen it yet, please check it out here:

Awww thanks for credit, all I really did was give you some advice. Can not wait to see the shell on the frame and the car running
