The tip of that tool snapped off after about 20 seconds of use. Perhaps the sealant has fossilized over the past 20 years or something. I think I'm just going to call an auto glass service and have them remove it. While smashing it would no doubt be loads of fun, it also sounds dangerous and messy. I will skip that.![]()
Ok, I take it back. after watching that video, I just might have to sledge hammer it.
I just wanted to say thanks and keep up the good work. It is threads like this one that were the reason that I joined the rpf - an iconic prop, detailed progress reports with pictures and the work being done with a limited amount of space and without a specialized workshop. You make it seem like everyone can give it a shot.
hey, thanks adorman1! That is very kind of you to say, and I really appreciate it! I'm glad you guys are enjoying the progress updates and all the other stuff that goes along with the build up. I assure you, I'm having just as much fun![]()
Thanks Tim! I'm trying to stick with the plan of "a little bit every day", which seems to be going well so far. I just want to keep momentum going, and I personally find that it helps to not be over ambitious. Earmarking an entire weekend for the car (or any project) just isn't possible, and I know if I did that, I would just get dissuaded.
So I try to put in an hour here, and hour there, just to keep things moving. So far so good!
Current status:
I have a few more pics and some details posted on my blog.
The Project Workbench: Front Windshield = Smashed.
Damn, definatly not as clean as Youtube.
Hitting it with a hammer must have been fun though?
It was actually pretty terrifying!! lol.
And guys, on a serious note, THANK CRIKEY I was wearing my eye protection. When the glass finally gave and broke, I felt a spray of glass dust and chunks hit my face. If I wasn't wearing the glasses, who knows what would have happened!
Safety first!
Speaking of which, I just called an auto glass company. Someone is coming out later today to remove the front and back glass. I'm done dorkin' around with that stuff.
Called in a pro. in FIVE minutes, he had both the front and rear glass taken out. I filmed it all, by the way

I know that approach well, as I've been applying it to various repairs/upgrades at my condo. Don't do it when you're tired after work, though...I hit my finger with a hammer when mounting some electrical cable (with insulated staples) in the basement...ow!
Even with a bit here and there, your progress is impressive. I look forward to the stripped down frame, which you must drive around the block, wearing a wifebeater with beer in hand.![]()
I'm glad you played it safe bud because a batmobile for a blind man really would'nt be that much fun. Keep up with the safety and this is going to be STELLAR!!! Keep up the great work and good luck.
I took the roof off today, with a new reciprocating saw I purchased. It took all of five minutes.
Here's a blog entry about it:
The Project Workbench: The Roof Has Been Removed
I hope to get some more work done tonight also.
Glad tear down is progressing nicely aside from the occasional mechanical hiccup and things are copacetic.
BTW nice job on the rack assembly for your Fuji, we own a few here and there phenomenal bikes.
Yeah, Fuji makes some nice bikes. I have the Roubaix. I believe it's a 2008 model that I purchased in 2009. Got a great discount as it was a year old. The lightest bike I've ever owned. I burned through four saddles looking for a comfortable one. It's got some carbon fiber on it, but it's mostly aluminum. The tri bars are carbon fiber though, and really make long distance rides much more tolerable.
I havent read through the thread, but I really hope you braced the car by welding in crossbeams before cutting the roof off. It doesn't look like you have, but the roof is actually an important structural component to a a car, and the body will warp/twist if not braced properly.
Again, this is a Body-on-frame car.
Body-on-frame - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The body and frame are independent of each other.
Ah, here's the problem;
Matt have you seen the amazing footage on youtube of the Ohio resident who has a turbine in his batmobile.
Now thats footage!
Having said that I just wanted to say this thread and your videoblogs are an inspiration to a man who can barely hang a coatrack like me.
Keep up the great work
Ruddigger, i certainly do appreciate you looking out for me, and for the suggestion. The good news is, as slave1pilot pointed out, that this is a body on body style car. This model year caprice has been used successfully on a couple well documented bat builds, and I am just following in their footsteps
But dont let slave1 scare you off! Please dont hesitate to jump in if you see someyhing that you want to comment on. The next time, you might end up saving me a ton of trouble.
The night ended late for me. Laamberry is back on a pepakura kick, which means i had more free time for tear down. I probably put in about four hours total today, which is great. The wiring is almost completely tagged and removed from the inside of the car. Crazy mess.
More pics tomorrow, and probably a video on monday.
Tardis55, yea, that guy is a fellow member of CLTC. i follow his work, as he is incredibly talented, and fast. The turbine powered car is his second build. Amazing stuff.
I took the radiator off today. The front end now looks really small and empty.
Kind of amazing when you compare it to this, which is how it looked back in March.
