Almost looks like a 60's tail light, one of those really long vertical ones.
Almost looks like a 60's tail light, one of those really long vertical ones.
Or maybe, staying in the 70's, one of those long horizontal ones like this:

Have you tried posting on an automotive board? I'll bet some old mechanic could point you in the right direction. Failing that find a garage that's been around a while and ask the oldest guy there. At the very least he may be able to confirm it's a tail/headlight mount.
Sorry to keep posting, feel like I'm hijacking!
From my google searching it looks like it's just the gasket, not the entire housing. Getting some similar shapes (but nothing concrete yet) with google searching: 70s tail light gasket
Gonna try 60s now but based on what I've seen I think we're definitely on the right track.
I've been looking on Ebay for "bracket assembly" and I am also seeing some familar shapes but nothing that fits... just yet! I hope we're on the right track...![]()
The thin piece on the right looks like something would "latch" into place... hmmmmmm
Possibly the inside of the ol'Volvo's pop-up door lock mechanism, having a look.
EDIT: not a pop-up lock mechanism.

It is amazing all the cool and funky shaped parts manufacturers produce... Ebay is LOADED with good stuff!
Still looking...
That is the problem of replica build.
Propbuilder get that stuff what is laying around in the junkyard, place some part there an one piece here, ready are the greeblies.
If you try to reproduce 100%, you have to find out what random parts was used.... an hunt it on ebay or elsewhere
I dont think most people realize what it takes to design a car? Look at the sub assemblies for a headlight or a dash cluster - its truly a work of art. All we see is the outside. Most people NEVER see the details or realize that a guy or gal spent time to design a piece that would never be seen.
I thought it was just duct tape and popsicle sticks?
Anyone tried an 'electric window' winding thingy?
For a split second I thought I found it!!! I found a Lionel Lines 681 Model Train Frame Assembly on Ebay that closely resembled the part...![]()
Isn't it wierd that in the SW universe no buttons ever have labels? How would anyone know how to drive this thing? Hundreds of buttons and not a single one telling you what it does?![]()
Hi G
I ended up having to re-do the moulds, the other ones didn't work out too well using the clay, but as they were made out of the exess from my batch, I'm not too bothered.
So this time round, after a bit of thought, I decided to go for block moulds after all, and split them on one side to extract the part once the silicone has cured
First I cut some rough squares from some 1.2mm plastic I had lying around, then drilled a hole in the middle of each for the switches. I then used the nuts that came with them to hold them nice and tight on to the plastic:
Then propped them up with two pieces of wood:
I took a couple of tops from some odd containers my brother gave me and dremeled a hole in them:
Then hot glued them around the paddle switches and filled:
I'll let you know the results tomorrow![]()
Keep in mind the Volvo parts weren't from the junk yard. They were new from the supplier/manufacturer. It was probably right around a model change and the dash panels were leftover surplus.
Gaskets are typically flat rubber shapes. I'm not sure that's the right direction. This unknown piece has electronic components at one end.
I am pretty sure the piece pictured is a dash assembly viewed from the back side. The part to the left is a gauge/idiot light assembly.
Tough to say. 240 Volvo has a long rectangular dash/gauge panel, but the vents usually go all the way to the corner(On some models there is a gauge there), this piece is divided a few inches from the right end so that does not match to well. The other thing is that this is almost certainly a right hand drive car(if it is a dash panel) so the chance of a random web photo get pretty rare.
Could be from a VW(My Scirocco had a piece very much like the part on the left) , or a Renault. Lots of boxy dash boards in the seventies.
Hi G
Good morning
Well the moulds are set, so I decided to break them out.
First I cut base around the mould to remove the exess plastic
I then cut a section away to give Mr Dremel (and his custome made tiny cutting head) better access
That's one funky a**, cool lookin' mould
I then cut the parting line to extract the switch
This old DJ is back in the mix.......of a different kind
Time to sit back, and watch a perfect mix go down a treat
By the way, I'm going to need to make more moulds, I still had most of that tiny batch left over, I'm thinking that 1kg is going to go a long, long way
I'll post pics of the first pull in a bit, I'm letting them sit for the full cure time as I don't want to bend, or distort them as I'm de-moulding.
