I finally got a real exactra 19 calculator to put real bubbles on my graflex saber...i should be happy. Am i nuts to feel bad about pulling a 40 year old rare calculator apart...or should I JUST DO IT... :) Anyone have tips on removal of the bubble strip and cutting it to size? Thanx curt :)

nice find! It;s good to appreciate the historical value of these things we use for props. Regardless, just do it!

I hear fine toothed saws work best.

If it wasn't for putting the bubbles in a graflex, no one would care about a 40 year old calcutor... it would just be an outdated piece of tech.

DO EEEEET. Keep the shell, screw it back together, and display it with it if you like. In fact, get the proper replica, and I'm pretty sure you can replace the bubbles and get it working again (maybe not).

Keep the screws as they MAY be the type used on Luke's ESB saber....may...

and pics please! We'd love to see how you're making out!

You can cut the plastic-pins of the bubblestrip on the backside of the platine/board with an exacto knive.

Mask the bubbles with tape and begin to sand. Be patient and sand...

Just yank them OUT!!! :thumbsup They are held in by 6 tiny posts that give-way very easily with a small amount of pull.

On my first set I used a file... real pain in the bum!! Soooo slooooww.... On the second set, I used my grinding wheel to trim them down (very carefully of course), and worked like a charm!! Nice and quick! Trim them down to the size of the smooth rectangular section underneath, and have a Grafelx clamp nearby to keep checking the length while you file or grind.

:cheers

I couldn't make myself prying them out of a working calculator in good condition. The calculator has character!
If it had been broken, that would have been a different matter.

I still don't know if the bubble gets underneath the clamp or just locked between the clamp lips.
the toe pic would make me think it's not so much sanded to get underneath the clamp.
About the obiwan saber I would more think it gets underneath.

It is a toss up. Had I been working on the original props, I would have put the unmodified strip in the clamp first. I would have then noticed that it didn't fit 'properly' and I would have modified it so that it did 'fit'. (Unless I was in a hurry or didn't care.)

I know for a fact that there is one at my parent's house. Along with my death star playset (what's left of it) and my Darth Vader case of figures.
