metal astro spares radar eye secured.. head is more or less done.
Got all but half the parts for the leg. Just need two outer feet, utility arms, deep pocket vents, and all the parts needed for r2's outside wil be taken care of. then it's the 'fun ' part of the electronics to make him move.. anyone know what i'll need there?
Total R2 cost, $4859. 80% metal.
Totally awesome! It's always been a dream of mine to build an R2. Not sure if I missed it but Where did you get the domes if I may ask? I figure the head is a good place to start.
Keep up the excellent work!
Looks like some great parts and a good build going.
Mine is all finished, but I need the rear logic display lights and a good soundboard.
Do you know if anyone makes aluminum door surrounds. The two large front doors on the right and left - I need the surround that goes around the door.
I am looking to start mine very soon and I am glad you posted this up.
Yours is looking great and I will continue to follow with high interest.
The Eye still needs some sanding and one final paint to try and smooth it all off. I wound up chipping off the last paint job and starting all over. I also need to wait a day for epoxy to dry and the holes to be filled up.
The scraped up rough paint looks good in my opinion.
Its all coming together nicely. It already looks like R2. Great job so far, keep going!
Your pics of the project are an awesome journal. I have always been intrigued as to how to go about building an R2. Now I have an idea of all the time and effort it takes. I just joined, and even though I am doing it more for references on my rocketeer project, I will be keeping an eye out on your progress.
R2 skirt arrived, frame should shipin a day or so
skirt arrived and assembled. frame ships today, yay!
Frame gets here this week... anyone have any pictures of their frame assembly? Have a com8b frame
now lets hope i don't mess it up
just a quick loosee at where i hope to be in another week when i come back from the shore..
I think i may be missing parts for the utility arm section...gotta figure out how that goes together next...
Wow, Neil. So glad to see this coming together! You have documented this phenomenally, and I can't wait to see the finished result.
Almost there.. In my quick attempt to mock assemble it yesterday, i had parts switched. now i've got it all worked out although i think i skipped a step.i have parts left over. i assume some of those parts are the skin snaps i ordered.. will have to go back and re-read to see which step i missed.
yesterday i used the yellow marker to keep my progress in order.. should have continued that today
Coming Soon, Construction Video of all the photo's and video here.,...hopefully it'll help out some of my other fellow clue less newbies
Frame is done..minus center foot plate. I wanted to see how tight the skins fit, so i tied 'em on. it's real tight in the front with the LDP. Tommorow, I hope to get the dome permanent on the top of the frame by drilling through the rockler and putting screws on. not sure i understood the instructions 100%, so just want to confirm before i do it
now that i know i've been visualizing this rockler bearing install wrong, i've got to take that off, counterink the holes from the top, re-attach, and drill the screws from the top side in all the way to the bottom.
hopefully in the next two hours the dome should be firmly attached to the frame. Now that I know the proper name for the skin mounting blocks, i can look up info (however hopefuless that is for me) and see how to use those properly to instal the skins

armed with the proper info, the head is on and spinning...it may need some adjustment, the spinning isn't quite smooth.
fantastic build! i can't wait to see the progress.
this is brilliant i would love to have the cash for a build like this(never happen) going to keep a eye on this, well done
Actually you can build one of these in plastic for considerably less than a metal one. There are plans for basically an all plastic one. Granted it had an R5-D4 head but I believed it weighed only 35 lbs. But there is a plastic R2 dome available.
If you bought all resin parts to detail with it wouldn't cost too much. You should join the Astromech forum and check it out. It can be done. I just wish I had the time to finish mine.
Neil, this is coming along nicely!
