DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion - Greeblies POST 208

Re: DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion

I would like to discuss the scope brackets

We pretty much nailed the Bespin Bracket in my last project

But now we need to figure out the Hoth Bracket which is shorter and wider then the Bespin Version.

Please pay attention to the area, where the "arm" of the scope mount tilts back...
this features a slight radius on the Luke Bespin and an even bigger radius on the Han Bespin...NO sharp corner

The rear end of Hans scope mount is also more rounded than Lukes.

Agreed with Markus 100%.

Also the both bracket is much smaller. It doesn't mount as low on the Mauser either.

Re: DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion - Scope Bracket Starts at POST 111

What they said! I'm after the Han Bespin mount, so it would be nice if this was an option.

I am going to offer both versions and for those that missed post 118 here it is again:

I would like to figure out the Hoth Version of the scope mount but this is the best picture I have of it:

I have a real Thorens disc but even with that it will be difficult to extrapolate accurate measurements from that picture

It's the best picture in the public domain that I know of.

Can anyone do some magic to this image to make it more defined?

MR must not have even had this photo, their ESB bracket was way off for a Hoth version, they used a Bespin bracket. Using the MR blaster for reference, the Thorens disk is the overall right size when placed where it would be on the screen used Hoth, but to me something is not quite right. The center ring on the Thorens looks a bit smaller than what is seen on the real blaster, though that could just be the photo.

I know they used a bunch of odd stuff on the SW props, but I often wonder how someone came across this small disc from a turntable.

I just tried messing with the photo. Unfortunately those shadow areas are like big ink blobs, there's nothing there to enhance.

The center of the disk touches the blaster, not the outside ring

Here's my scan - it's a bit bigger than kurtyboy's, but I don't know if there's anything else to see:

Re: DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion - Scope Bracket Starts at POST 118

Were the scope mount spacers on these just machined thick metal washers or were these a found part too? (Thinking about that pic of luke head-on)

Re: DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion - Scope Bracket Starts at POST 118

Here´s something with the basic measurements...I went with a slightly idealized version when I scratched my bracket

Here´s a pic of my handmade mount...not perfect but you´ll get the idea. I eyeballed the radii on the mount and handfiled them.
The domed black hex-screws are a tad too big :unsure

I never said it didn't. What I was saying was the inside circle looks smaller on the real blaster than it does on the Thorens disk.

Nice job Markus!!

Re: DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion - Scope Bracket Starts at POST 118

The center circle does look to be a touch smaller in diameter. Dunno if it's light playing tricks or what.

It is filled with glue residue,,, during the filming of ESB, there was an additional greeblie attached to the Thorens disc.
that's why the recessed area in the center seems to be smaller

Could easily be the case.

Re: DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion - Scope Bracket Starts at POST 118

For those of you wondering about the Thorens disc, I found it completely on accident. The model of turntable it came off of was made in the early to mid 60's, not widely distributed outside of Europe, is generally the right size and shape. Also, given that weird turntable parts turn up quite a bit, especially on the ESB props and set dressings, also lends it some credence.

Re: DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion - Scope Bracket Starts at POST 118

Odiwan: Thanks for the measurements. Unfortunately I have to work in inches so I did so preliminary work

The top box in this drawing is 2.550" x .125" which converts to 64.82mm. I think it awesome that we came to the same dimension using independent methods.

I'm off to a good start but before I continue I just need to see what the consensus is so far.

It's looking good, David! What's keeping you from continuing?

Draw it up with the point that you're talking about and let's see how it looks?

I mean this part has radii where the Bespin version has sharp angles, so I think it's safe to assume there might be other deviations like that.

Re: DL-44 ESB Blaster Discussion - Scope Bracket Starts at POST 118

I'm concerned about the back corner.

As you can see it comes to a point which is different from the Bespin version which has a slight radius
