!!!WELCOME!!! ONE, AND ALL, TO THE 2009 "$1. STORE" LIGHTSABER CONTEST.!!!!

What is this, you ask? It is a one (1) months long contest, running from November 1st, to midnight December 1st. Where in, you must construct a lightsaber out of parts bout exclusively at $1. stores, with a maximum budget of $20. per person. (Please read all the rules bellow, and if you have any questions at all, please PM, or e-mail them to me, or post here. )

"Why do this?" Because it's cheap, fun, good practice, and............ oh yeah, you could win a prize. :)

"What are the details (rules, etc) ?"

1. It is free to enter.

2. You may enter, no matter how long you have been a member. Weather you have been here since the beginning, or if you just joined yesterday, you are welcome.

3. One (1) entree per person, please.

4. All parts must come from a $1. store, or the international equivalent. (see rule 10 for details on international entrees) And this means $1. STORE, No "I got this really cool part on clearance at lowes, for a $1." kind of thing. We are talking about the stores where ever items is $1. (or, if they still call them .99$ stores, in your area, that would be fine too.) Stores like "Dollar Tree", "Dollar Zone", or any of those small "Mom, and Pop" $1. stores. Sorry, but this does not include "Family Dollar", or "Dollar General' (or is it "General Dollar"?) , because not everything in those stores are $1.

5. All items must be purchased, and lightsaber constructed, during the contest period. (the month of November 2009) No receipts dated before November 1st 2009 will be excepted, nor will any lightsabers constructed before that date.

6. There is a maximum budget of $20. per person. This does not include tax, or shipping . "$20." means 20 items from the $1. store.

7. If you can find a $1. store online, or a friend that will ship $1. store items to you, that's fine. (that's why it says shipping will be ignored in rule 6.) However, you will have to show some kind of proof of when you bout the items, and how much was spent. (just have your friend include the receipts, or keep a copy of the invoice from the online store.) If it is from a web site, it must be an online "$1. store". No ebay, or places like Wal*mart.com, lowes.com etc. etc. everything on the site must be $1. before tax and shipping.

8. The $20. budget applies only to the parts used for the body of the lightsaber. You may use your own Glue, Epoxy, paint, tools, fasteners, etc.. to assemble, and "finish" your lightsaber. However, you may not use any item not purchased from a $1. store, as part of the structure of said lightsaber. (see rule 9. for a little more clarification.)

9. If you wish to cast parts for your saber, you may, but all the casting material, and the item being cast, must come from a $1. store. That means, you would have to find items at a $1. store, to make your mold, make your casting, and even the item your casting must either, be from a $1. store, or made from parts from a $1. store.

For example, you may, buy clay, wood, etc. from a $1. store. Sculpt a saber part, or the whole saber from those items. Then use Caulk, and other items found at a $1. store, to make a mold (you may want to do a search for "getto mold making" here on the boards. ;)) , and then us Chocolate, Epoxy, or something else from a $1. store, to make the casting.

You may not, use silicon, resin, epoxy, or any other materials that you already own, or get from a non $1. stores, to cast, an item, and you may not use items you already own, or bought from a non $1. store as the item being cast.. IN OTHER WARDS , DON'T CAST AN "MASTER REPLICAS" LIGHTSABER IN CHOCOLATE, OR ANY THING LIKE THAT.

10. international entrees are welcome. Please us the denomination of your currency, closest to 1 US dollar. (i.e. 1 Pound, 1 ERO, etc. etc.) and a max of 20 of said currency, before tax, or shipping. (i.e. 20 pounds, 20 ERO, etc. ) And, I ask, if it is at all possible, that you also shop only at your countries equivalent to a "$1. store". ( i.e. 1 ERO store) If there is no such thing in your country, please do your best to conform to as many of the rules listed here, as possible, pertaining to budget, and of course all of the other rules listed here would still apply.

11. For those dead set on machining your lightsaber, you're welcome to do so, as long as what you machine your lightsaber from, comes from a $1 store. For example, if you can find a way to lathe a broom handle into a lightsaber, then go right ahead.

12. You may do a replica lightsaber, or an original custom lightsaber from the $1. store parts. However, originality is encouraged, and as stated above, no castings of existing replicas. (MR, Parks, etc.)

13. The contest will run from November 1st. to midnight December 1st.

14. All entrees must include:

A scan of all receipts that pertain to the contest (if there are only a few items used for the contest, and the rest are for your own consumption, please circle, or underline, the items used for the lightsaber.)

A picture of the parts before construction (preferably in package, but if you have to open them, to show what they are, that's fine.)

And, at least one good picture of your finished lightsaber.

15. You may submit your entree at anytime during the month of November, by sending the required pictures (see rule 14) to me, either by PM, or by e-mail at
jedimasterjpb7@aol. Please title your message, or e-mail, "2009 Lightsaber Contest Entree", and if your e-mailing your entree, please include your RPF screen name, in the body of the e-mail.

16. All pictures will be held until the contest entree period is over, on December 1st. (We don't want anyone taking your idea, and trying to improve on it, and steeling your thunder)

17. Pictures will be posted as soon as possible after the deadline of December 1st. (hopefully within a day, or two.)

18. Wall it is encouraged that you post your intention to participate in this contest, in this thread, it is not required. In other words, if you prefer, you can PM, or e-mail me your entree without posting in this thread. Though at least a simple "I'm in", or "I'll tack a crack at it" etc. would be welcomed.

19. I reserve the right to post your screen name as a participant. This means, wall you are welcome to not post your intended participation in the contest, in this thread, I can. (this claws is only for things like posting winners screen names, etc. )

20. voting will run for one week after contest pictures are posted.

21. Voting will be open to all of the RPF, weather they made an entree, or not.

22 once voting has ended, please allow, 2 to 3 days for tallying votes.

23. Once the votes have been tallied, the winners will be posted, and prizes selected.

24. The first place winner will have first choice of witch two (2) prizes they want. (after all, they are the big winner, so they should get something extra. ) Then second place will choose 1 prize from those remaining. Then 3rd place will chose 1 prize, then 4th, and so on, until we run out of prizes.

Oh, and 25. Have fun. :)

PRIZES: A lot of great folks around here, donated some really great stuff, and I can't thank them all enough.

Some of the donations just go too well together, to pass up, so I've combined some of them in to "sets". These "sets" will count as one prize. That means, even if the person winning first place choose one of these "sets", he, or she, may still choose one other item. If any of these "sets" remain, after the 1st place winner has selected, the other winners may also choose one of these "sets" until they are gone. If you want one of the items in the "set", but not the others, let me know when you select, and I'll separate them out, and the item from the "set" that you don't want, will go back up for grabs. As mentioned in the rules, we will give prizes out, until we run out. I'm sorry, if that winds up being an arbitrarily number, (i.e. if we have 6 prizes, then that means only the top 5 people get something, but if we have 10 prizes, by the time the contest ends, then the top 9 will get something. etc.)

I will continue to except donations throughout the contest, so the prizes listed bellow, are only the ones we have so far. I will try to keep updating the list, when, or if, new prizes are offered, but these are the ones we have for sure. :)

(In no particular order)

1. A Greflex 3 cell flash, donated by Jediscout, along with your choice of Graflex conversion kits from Blast-tec (yodashouse). You can choose from either of his Luke ANH kits (GX-1 or GX-2 on his site) or his Luke ESB kit (GX-3 on his site). (take a look at http://www.blast-tech.com/products_packagedKits.asp)

2. Tripoli has donated an Iron Man Arc Reactor paperweight, and Jedifyfe has donated an Iron Man Newspaper,Rollingstone Cover,Forbes Cover, Newsweek Cover, and Ghalmera photo set.

3. Skaught has donated one of his great IG-88 head casts.

4. Hotshot has donated Scout Trooper gloves and resin blaster.

5. Ripcode has donated a Graflex 3-cell Sychronizer Battery Case. (the kind used as the base for the "Holiday special" Luke lightsaber.)

6. Gunnerk19 has donated Burger King ROTS wristwatches, and Jcoffman99 has donated Burger King ROTS cups of various sizes . (the cups are unused .)

I ask that when you consider what prizes you want, when the contest is over, that you please select something you really want, and not just because it's the most expensive. This is not a rule, I would just like to see folks get stuff they will enjoy, rather then taking something someone else wants, only to turn around and sell it. )

Sorry for so many rules, but many of these rules answer question I've already been asked about the contest, and I remember these kinds of things asked in the last "$1 store" contest years ago (hosted by another member). Hopefully I've covered just about everything, but if not, let me know. Also, I'm sorry if you're not happy with the rules, but they are the rules for the duration of this particular contest, changing them mid stream would not be fare to all involved.

Thanks for taking the time to read all the rules, and ............ LET THE CONTEST BEGIN!!!

I've got a few folk PMing me about having non member entering the contest.

Wall I would never, want to discourage anyone from taking an interest in prop making, or from participating in this contest. I would like to keep this to RPF members only. If those non members would like to join the RPF forums, and they do so, during the run of the contest (from November 1st, to December 1st) then they would be welcome to join the contest :)

It's free to join the forums, and it really is a blast to be a member around here. I've learned so much over the years, and met some really great, talented, folks. So there really is no reason not to join the forums. :)

And for those wanting to post about the contest on other forums, blogs, etc. You are more then welcome to spread the word, and it would be much appreciated, as long as it is clear that you have to be a member to enter.

Thank god I live in redneck heaven!!! I can't spit without hitting one!

Yeah I was over in Cambridge Ohio, today, and hit there "Dollar Tree", and "Dollar zone", and they had a ton of great stuff to build sabers from. I of course can't enter the contest, but it was fun just to see what was out there. I live in Columbus Ohio, and every "Dollar tree" I go to in town has at least a few things that the others don't so don't give up, if you doen't see what you want at the first one you go to.

Next time I have my son for the weekend (hes 11, and a major SW fan) he and I will hit the dollar store and go shopping.

Sounds exactly like the kind of weekend activity we need =D

Virtually every attempt i've made this year at a decent prop replica has been scuppered due to funding, work or more recently my wifes health issues. However this... this is something I can get behind. Count me in. Oh hey look, a poundland just opened in my town...
