Hi, I've never applied formica, but I went to their website and poked around in the technical docs a bit. They don't give specs for a primer, and they don't include any priming steps in the repair section. I used this RustOleum.comwhen I primed the plywood underlayment in my laundryroom and bathroom, before applying some really cheap self stick floor tiles, I figured I'd be replacing them in 3-5 yrs with ceramic, well it's been 11 years and none have popped :lol. I liked the H2O based low odor fomula because I was working in the house but they make a shellac base as well. It really sealed the pores of the wood well and kept the adhesive from being drawn away from point of contact. Hope this helps and it's looking really incredible :thumbsup

Bumps or dents could be masked as "battle damage"! :) whatever you choose, good luck and amazing work.

Hi Gang,

Just a quick update... Having chatted with Starkiller, all is well with the side wall dimensions - whew. Also... The console below, is in its basic resting place. However, I need to create a platform 7" inches high that will also span across the floor from side wall to side wall - I'll use basic plywood and stain black. That's going to be a bulky piece... :)

Hey BD,

I used Formica when creating the console body. The process is VERY simple. I just didn't think far enough ahead as to how I would apply the material to all the different panels without the proper tools / know how. Applying the Formica to the quad base is MUCH easier and very straight forward. One top layer - one side layer - no funky angles!

However... painting the Formica is a whole new ballgame. I used KILLZ primer (as suggested by the folks at the home improvement stores) and that worked for the most part. But there were several areas that gave me such grief I swore I would never use Formica again! lol See link: This first shows the issue I had with the primer/paint

I might go back and use the Formica again. As much as I hated using it, it did leave a fantastic smooth finish to work with.

Hi S,

Thanks! I need all the luck I can get! Actually, in terms of the basic build I'm more than half way there. Just a two more side walls and a platform need to be constructed and then paint / pinstriping everything else.

There is still the issue of the alignment problem on Han's side. I'm going to work that this week and hope for the best! I really don't want to create another 2/3 panels...

gotcha, I thought you were looking for something to prime the plywood before applying the laminate glue, alot of times the reason glued floor tiles "pop" it because the glue is absorbed into the wood underlayment, I was thinking if you had adhesion problems in the past, priming your substrate (especially porous wood) would help keep the laminate from coming loose.
As far as painting over formica.......:sick. :lol

The only time I ever had an adhesion problem was when the console was sitting in the direct sun during the summer. The glue hadn't cured all the way and the Formica began to peel away from the plywood. Other than that - zero issues.

Hi Gang,

Question: As you all know I created a mold of the button knobs. I've sanded and primed most of them but the primer on 3 of the knobs has NOT dried yet - even after 4 days and being inside the primer is still tacky. The rest are perfect... Any ideas? My thought is a chemical reaction?

I have painted a couple of formica kitchen counters. The best luck I had was a good sanding with 180 grit, (I think), then primed and painted with epoxy paint. It dries as a hard layer and it seems really durable. Hope that helps.

On the tacky primer, I have noticed that with spray can primer if the can is low, 1/3 or less, when spraying. In most cases I had to remove it and re-prime. It eventually orange-peeled and was crap.

SK, you're probably already doing this, but make sure you wash the pieces with soap and water to remove and any surface chemicals including mold release. I second ShadoWorx thoughts that giving it a light sanding will also help.

When done you need to set this up on a hydraulic rig so that it can move around as you're piloting it! :D
