Good morning everybody, as it already is 5 am here, and every single thing I'm hopelessly trying to cram into my brain finals flies away, thoughts of my suit project filling all the space my head...
So, I'm planning to make my own IM MK7 suit, like many other great people here. But I'm going to use Xrobot's urethane coating process, for the whole suit except joints and parts that need to be flexible (I'm thinking collar right now...and that's all I got...). Some of the parts will probably be coated on both sides, to solidify them.
The goal is to have the best looking/movie accurate suit I can make with my inexperienced hands in foam crafting, so despite the fact that foam suit are originally chosen to be easy, fast, not to expensive build, it won't be the case here. I will take as much time as I need to get it right, and a decent budget (won't go over 1.5K thought, and I spread the cost of course).
That's it for the intro, now the technical aspect
: 10mm, 5mm and 3mm plastazote foam, depending on the parts. Hold its shape really well when heated, so it makes great curves in no time, and no gazillion cuts everywhere like traditional pep.
: a mix of Darkside501st's pep fil, as well as JFCustom's custom foam pep of Darkside and my own custom JFcustom's customized Darkside's pep file (customception
), because I find some of the parts not as movie accurate as I wish, and also for sizing reasons.
: I've played a little with servo controls and stuff when I was way younger, mostly with my dad when he helped me building all kind of things, he is surprisingly not so bad at this, for a surgeon ! But for now, I just have EL sheet panels for the lightning of eyes/chest/repulsors, with powerful drivers to get them bright enough (not as bright as led I guess, but good enough). I do hope to be able to add, later, at least a motorized face plate, and why not some other gadgets (flaps, laser beams). I do have a question for you guys here : what is the color of the eyes ? White or blue ? I currently have a blue set, but ordered a white one too, because I find the blue too...blue ! I'll post a pic of this later.
What I've done so far
Well, I have all the materials I need to start, and I actually already have started.
I chose to start with the forearm, thinking it wouldn't be too complicated. Boy was I wrong ! I used a JFCustom template, that I quite heavily modified, making it longer and re-arranging the way it folds. I cut it out of 10mm foam and started assembling it, but I've made a few mistakes : first I glued some parts together before heating it to give the shape, no need to say that hot glue didn't like it and partially melt, messing up a few things. Problem is, the few things I didn't glue prior heating turned out hard to glue after... I'll need to figure out something here. Maybe protecting glued seems from heat gun with aluminum sheets ? Then the cuts were messy, straight ones we're OK, but no 45° cut I made was clean, just can't do it with my hobby knife. I'll buy something to make cleaner cut I think. I also had trouble with the glue gun, leaving some dried glue where I don't want it. Finally, despite my custom adjustments to an already +10% scaled template, it still was too small. Not large enough for my hand to fit through, not big enough for the upper forearm to fit inside and not long enough in my taste. Already corrected the template for this. The result is a failure, but as the great Adam Savage says : "failure is always on option", I learn and start again. Although I do not like wasting foam, it takes a few days to import and it's not as cheap as yoga mat but like I said, it's gonna cost what it's gonna cast, even if I don't like it.
I'll post a few pictures of what I have later today, including my duct tape dummy that awaits its spandex skin.
If you have taken the time to read me until here, I thank you for your interested in my thread and I hope to keep you interest, and maybe inspire some of you like I've been inspired by a lot of fascinating threads here, which leads me to this : I'd like to thank Darside501st and JFCustom for their pep files and for sharing their knowledge with us, like a lot of other incredible folks here, like indiefilmgeek, who are really an exemple to follow.
I will know try to get a couple hours of sleep before heading to the slaughterhouse that will be this history final. Why aren't there any prop building college, why
