Batman Dark Knight Returns comic cowl

So The Dark Knight Returns has been one of my favorite graphic novels for about 25 years now... so I wanted to do up a cowl that would look like Frank Millers style but would fit a regular guy :)

Here is the cowl I came up with and sent in to get printed today. Ill add more details once I get the print, I think it will look great in a dark blue or maybe a dark grey colour.

So I modeled up a Bat for the chest today, getting it printed, its beveled and about 24cm wide at the widest point :)

I made it about 4mm thick and will mold it and cast it in 40 Shore rubber to make it easy to glue to an outfit.

So I printed off the bat, going to start working on that next week. Now for some fins and hopefully I get the cowl print sometime soon :)

Ok so an update, printed some fins while I'm busy doing some other props.. When I get the cowl I will spend some time finishing up the bat and the fins at the same time :

ok, i guess :D

What 3D printer do you have? I'm assuming it doesn't have a large enough build envelope to print a full cowl.

So, a couple questions:

If you're printing it in multi pieces, how are you joining it together?

If you're outsourcing it (Shapeways?) - what's the estimated cost of the print? Just curious.

Looks great! Can't wait to see the costume come together!

One thing about 3D printing is... you can get accurate with the prints, but then your about 1/2 way there...maybe? you still need to work the print, which is a PIA from shapeways cause its nylon. Takes a lot of work from that point to get to a mold..

But yeah I'm getting the cowl out sourced but I've also printed off the bat and the fins from a Makerbot Replicator. Soon we will be expanding the Z axis so I should get 1/2 a cowl out of a print, then just glue them together and start working on them. :)
