Jun 9, 2012 - My DREDD Pepakura project #1

Well, here goes nothing! I've done all kinds of research and read more posts than I can remember, so now its time to get started and make those inevitable mistakes. I've built costumes from scratch, but I'm eager to try pepakura and there are so many masters of it here. I have my starting supplies and pep files and I'm just beginning to draw over the mountain and valley lines. My hope is to create an Antman costume from scratch ( ) and to create the helmet using this process. But before I begin a build like that, I want to try one that already has a pep file available. So I'm going to start with a Judge Dredd helmet and make my first mistakes there. I'll post pics as I go. Please give me any constructive criticism you may think up. Not a lot of free time so this will be slow, but its good to get started.

BTW, I read in a recent post that you can use almost any material during the glassing stage. I bought a pack of fiberglass cloth, but I have a question: My wife has a huge roll of Muslin strips (loose weave cotton) that she was going to toss out. Its used for leg waxing, but this roll got tossed in the garage accidentally when we moved so she doesn't want it. Do you think I could use it for glassing?

Progress is slow, but I'll be damned if this isn't addictive already. I have the two side panels, the dome and part of the side of the helmet glued together. I've been using Aleene's fast grab Tacky glue and it is working great. Here are a couple of small updates:

I appreciate it. Good stuff to work on at night before bed, at least at this stage. And thanks to Dung0beetle for the awesome files.

A little more glue last night and now the top of the helmet is done. Next I will start working on the small inner pieces that give the appearance of thickness before attaching the sides and then the back.

Awesome - I will be interested to see how this turns out, I've taken an interest in Dredd helmets, and I have the same Pep file as this, as well as the movie version too. Good stuff!

I have both pep files as well, but decided to go for more of a comic book look for my eventual costume-- but on a budget! I'll keep posting my progress.

For those few of you keeping track (), here's my morning update: I added the trim along the upper edge of the faceplate giving it some needed sense of substance, and also glued on the left side of the helmet. A little more trim and then on to the back.

Well, I finished the paper build last night, and I am quite happy with the process. The helmet came out looking good in all aspects but one... ITS TOO DARNED SMALL. Yep. I had a feeling I would have some scaling issues. The numbers looked good, but that would be for a mask or hat I guess, not a helmet. So its back to the drawing board. I'm thinking about scaling the next one up by 10% which will add about an inch in depth, about 3/4 of an inch in height and about 1/2 an inch across. Maybe I'll do even a bit more. But here's the current one:

I don't know if the muslin would work, my best advise would be to try it on a piece of scrap first. Since your first build was too small you could try it on parts of that. Good luck

Hey, i feel for you man! I had a couple of pieces come out too small and darned if I just didn't go back and do it again, and again and now on my 4th boot, I think I have it!

Good call on the muslin. I will test it on that first piece. I was away on vacation for about a week and a half so have not posted in a while. Scaled up pep build has been printed, outlined, cut and construction is underway. Hope to have pics of the new helm by the end of the weekend. Size looks better so far although I won't know for sure until its done.

I finally got back to work on this thing and finished up the paper build late last night (when I should have been asleep). At first, I thought it looked a little big. I boosted up the scale about 12 – 15% considering how ridiculously small the first one was. But then, once you consider the addition of padding inside, the inclusion of the face plate, and the fact that white always looks bigger, this size is growing on me. Proportionally its closer in size to the new Urban helmet. But it looked right size-wise in the full length mirror (not in pics). I actually have a dish towel running along the top of my head to make it sit right! So I think I’m going to stick with this size and see what happens.

I photoshopped in a black visor just to see how it will eventually start to look. Can't believe how exhausted (i.e. bad) I look in that last one.
