    Sep 24, 2012 - NY Comic Con is a Joke #1

I ordered a month ago a sunday pass to go meet Christopher Lloyd which has been scheduled for all days and now he bails on sunday? Why do they false advertise if they don't know who's set in stone? I made a post on NYCC facebook and it immediatly got deleted Now I'm stuck with no saturday pass because they are all sold out. This is the last time I go to these events.

Im sorry this happened to you. Perhaps something happened and he simply could not be there. I do think it would be good customer service for the event organizers to at least offer those who purchased the passes to meet Mr. Lloyd on Sunday have the opportunity to see him on Saturday.

That would be great if they did that but they just ignore you like it's no big deal. It's ashame my nephew was so dissapointed when i told him he wasn't gonna be there and he was begging me to go saturday but I work on saturdays.I would off made plans to take off from work if I would of known he wasn't gonna be there sunday. When they posted on their site about Lloyd just being there fri/Sat it was too late for me and they were sold out of tickets??? They stress to us to buy tickets early so we do that THINKING we are gonna see who we were promised to see on those days.I'm really pissed to say the least

Sorry to hear that Mike. Hopefully you will still find some tickets for Saturday from other sources. But can you make it to the con on saturday (and get off work) if you are able to arrange tickets?

BTW your post was not deleted, it is still there.

By default on the top of the page the post display settings are set to "Highlights", if you switch it to "Posts by Others" you can see your post at the top there.

I am moving this thread to the Events forum, maybe some other members can help you out with getting extra Sat tickets.

That really sucks. Patrick Stewart bailed on Fan Expo a couple weeks before the date and I was really looking forward to meeting him. I do believe though that all of these events have the small print that state the person may cancel at any time due to other obligations.

Hopefully you can get to see him on the Saturday if you can manage to swing it.

It's unfortunate, but this does happen, but you're right. Any of the guests and celebs can cancel or take off at any time. They're going to these cons usually as a service to fans, so their life and/or work takes precedence to staying through the whole con. Sucks, but how it is.

If I'm not mistaken though, Hobbystar released a statement on their website in conjunction with Stewart's cancellation for FanExpo saying he was really sorry but had to work, and will try to come back for another HS con in March 2013. He is appearing along with Shatner at a con in Montreal in November though! Go look for it, and if you can travel, you may not have to wait for possible 2013 meet & greet.

I missed my chance to see Dale Eaglesham at FanExpo on Sunday. I brought my comic into the dealer's room/artist alley only to find out that he'd already left the con. I missed his scheduled autograph sessions at the Marvel booth Fri and Sat. booooo.

Christopher Lloyd was supposed to be at Emerald City Comicon last time, but he cancelled (possible other obligations). I was bummed about that too because he was one of the main reasons I was going.

Unfortunately stuff just happens and it's completely out of our control.

You can't blame the con, they are often forced to work around the guest's schedules. Conflicting stuff sometimes comes up last minute and the con is forced to hold the bag.

When they booked him, he probably WAS available the whole weekend.... then work came up and Christopher Lloyd told the con he couldn't do Sunday. So the can basically has to say "okay" and not make a fuss. IF they do complain, they will only sour his experience and they will never get him to come back.

It blows, but it happens... more often than you would think. If you want to get pissed, blame Christopher Lloyd, he's the one who changed his schedule.

I'm not a big CON person off the bat and I'm sure alot of people are like me and when something is advertised and does not come through we just get the OH WELL??? No refund? No explanation? I'm not made of money and these con tickets are not cheap.Whoever is to blame whether it's Lloyd or comic con it still dont make it right on both ends.Christopher Lloyd gets paid to be there it's not like he's showing up for good will who are we kidding. If I read the fine print about the consequences of bail outs I would of never bought a ticket. They can't assume if someone bails it's all cool with the buyer??? If bail outs are the case then COMIC CON SHOULD NEVER POST THE DAYS THEY WILL BE THERE.It should say "Subject to availability" "Not Guaranteed on specific days" is that hard to do? I feel i got ripped off and that's that.If Comic con is that big of an event there should be obligations and contracts signed with the con and the celebrity and there would be no problems.People pay good money to see these celebrity's and we have a right before we commit to buy tickets to know for sure who will be there.

Getting pissed off and angry isn't going to change anything or make anything better. Nobody is "to blame". I'm not sure how you can act so entitled about someone who is taking time out of their life, career, etc. to talk to fans. Chill out, sell your ticket, and try again some other time.

There are plenty of conventions that celebrities like Christopher Lloyd attend. I'm under the impression that he's more-or-less on the convention circuit now and has been for years, so he'll swing around again and again (especially to the bigger cons like NYCC). As understandably disappointing as it can be, celebrities bailing on cons for one reason or another is old hat by now and shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, so cool off man. There will be other conventions and other appearances.

Wish I could! Don't think I can make it though. I'm not overly worried, I'll get him one day.

These ALWAYS say something along the lines of "Subject to availability" somewhere. Guest availability for events like this are organic. You'll get cancellations days before sometimes but you also get new guests days before.

Personally I'm jealous that Peter Davison is at NYCC. Wish we'd get a Doctor up here!

I haven't checked their site out but it's on every guest list from Con's I've gone to. If they don't have it I'd say you have an argument.

I've just gone through their website. I can't find anything on there about guests appearing 'subject to other commitements' etc. It may have been on your confirmation email - but if it was, its too late by then.

I was not aware that they got paid to be there. I always thought guests make an appearance for publicity/ego stroking and to get you to pay $50 for their autograph.

I would assume there is a fee, plus expenses and board, plus additional income from photos, etc.

That said, these are busy people, sometimes folks are going to cancel as other things come up. You should probably be able to get a refund though if one of the major stars at a convention drops out.

Funny, back in my day I never got paid for convention appearances (not that I was any kind of big name, mind you!). I did at least eight or nine of them, and money never came up. I was happy to do them, spreading the good will, and all..

I seem to remember - but take this with a grain of salt because the memory is hazy - talking to a convention organizer in the late nineties. He said that one of the male leads from Doctor Who in the 1980s, who was the main guest at this convention, was getting around three thousand pounds for the convention, plus his train fare and hotels and the rest of it.

I'm sure there are plenty of people on this board who are more involved with the money side of conventions and can give you an informed opinion instead of my waffle, but I'm going to tell you that a lot of these guys aren't there for free. My guess is that some of the really big stars that conventions pull in might be there under contract - if Matt Smith does a convention to promote Doctor Who now, that's part of his duties as a salaried actor, maybe, but that's a different thing.

I'd assumed that is was widely understood how some actors and actresses from cult shows might not be able to get the work that they want readily, so they supplement their income at conventions and signings and the like.

I've been going to cons for 10+ years and there are last minute schedule changes and cancellations all the time. Sundays are usually the day that gets dropped.

A dependable, reliable schedule is something you give up along with the 9 to 5 job. Anyone who freelances in a creative field will tell you that. I do commercial post production and when I am doing freelance work probably 75% of the jobs are last minute calls.

If you want to meet and greet your favorite actors then you're just going to have to deal with it. That's the way it is and it will always be that way.

Don't spend time getting angry about something you can change. It's pointless.

If the convention has sold you a ticket specifically for his autograph only (many conventions do this) then a refund is a reasonable request. However it sounds like you are talking about the convention membership, and a "no refund" policy is common, though I don't know why. Suffice to say there is more going on at a convention than some autographs.

As far as actors making money and cons, yes they get paid. Some get a fee for their appearance, some get free accommodations and a chance to sell some autographs. Some get both. Ultimately, their time and/or signature has value and they can charge whatever they think their time is worth. Whether they get that money depends on you. They aren't obligated to give it away for free.
