Doc Savage Final Costume

Thanks so much!!

I will be at WonderCon in Anaheim, CA in 2 weeks and will be wearing my Doc Savage costume for the first time.

Will find out how many people recognize the character.

Also, just found out Ron Ely will be there Friday for a panel on Doc Savage and Tarzan with Warner Bros.

If I can make it to that panel, may have to show up as Doc and see what the he thinks.

Rob:

Now that would be an interesting conversation....:D

However, I was thinking of taking my Doc Savage movie art print that I got from Roger Kastel. Roger created this Doc artwork for the movie and I got this signed print from him.

I thought it would be cool to have Ron Ely sign this as well and have it signed by both the artist and actor.

All depends on if I want to lug this rather large print around with me.

Rob:

Ok, I may also have him sign a Doc Savage movie photo that I created.

I always found the Bama Doc Savage with Fab Five pic to be something that stuck with me as a kid reading the paperback books. See first pic.

So, years ago when I had more spare time I decided to play around with some Ron Ely as Doc photos and the movie Fab Five. I created my own Doc Savage movie version of the famous Bama pic. See next pic

Also, just threw in Joe DeVito's version of Doc and his Fab Five, with Pat Savage, and Frank Hamilton's version of a pulp Doc and his crew to complete the set.

Enjoy!!

Nice poster work, Tahir!

Yes, the Bama portrait has always been my favorite, even though (to me), he made Doc look to be around age 45 to 50...or older.

When the DeVito version came out, I was impressed with his rendition of Doc...he looks a bit "younger" than Bama's.

Never cared much for Boris' version; he's a great artist, but more suited to the sword & sorcery genre, IMHO. I only wished Frazetta would have painted a Doc....his Conan was awesome!

Rob

Brilliant! Doc is one of my favorite Pulp characters. I like the skullcap styled hairstyle that was on so many of the covers.

Bravo Zulu, Tahir!

Skytja:

Thanks so much!!

The skullcap was the most difficult part of this outfit. It took many versions in different material to find the best one.

I had a chance to give the Doc outfit a trial run at WonderCon 2013 and I met Ron Ely. He thought the outfit was great!! Will post pics soon.

Wolf:

My goal is to make it to Doc Con this year and show up as Doc!!

I have tried a few times to go in the past and always had some conflict, but I feel this is the year I am finally going to make it!!

Are you going?

Tahir

So here are my first pics of me as Doc Savage at WonderCon 2003 and meeting Ron Ely!!

I went to Ron Ely's talk sponsored by Warner Bros Archive dressed up as Doc! He spoke about his time playing Tarzan and Doc Savage. A great panel!! After the talk I went up to say hello. I didn't know it at the time but another Doc fan, Jim Gould, was snapping photos. When I met the Warner representative he said they wanted to get me up on stage, but they had to clear out for the next panel and didn't have enough time.

So, the first pic is of Ron on the panel discussion. Then the second pic, you see me patiently waiting to get Ron's attention after the talk had finished. The last pic is when he turned and saw me; he had a great reaction and thought the costume was fantastic!!

Shook his hand, said hello and told him I would see him down on the convention floor where he would be signing autographs.

More pics to come!!

More Ron Ely WonderCon 2013 pics and me as Doc Savage:

Ron made it to the Warner Archives booth, see first two pics.

In the next pic you can see him signing a Doc Savage item I made for the 2004 Doc Con. I gave it to Jim Gould as a gift while waiting in line, and as Jim didn't have anything for Ron to sign, he gave Ron my homemade Doc item to sign.

You can see Ron signing it in the third pic. The look on his face says. "Why I am I singing this? It isn't a picture of me as Doc!"

I also have a pic of this Doc Con 2004 item in the next pic; I wrote Doc Savage in the margins so the whole item would scan, the writing is not on the original item.

I actually sent 4 of these to James Bama, as it is his original drawing from the back of the Bantam Doc books, and he signed them for me and mailed them back to me. Also, let him keep one.

Then in the last pic you see me patiently waiting in line with the Doc sign in the background.

Ron Ely and me at WonderCon 2013 continued:

Then it was my turn.

I had an oversized photo of Ron Ely as Doc Savage, posed in the iconic Doc stance. Roger Kastel had been commissioned to paint this for the 1975 Doc Savage movie.

Roger had sent me this photo after he had signed it. This iconic image of Ron as Doc can be seen on many movie related items.

I gave it to Ron to sign and he was kind enough to sign it, so now the poster has two great signatures. See last pic, sorry about the flash.

I also had to give him a special silver pen to sign it with, as it was a photo print, and I wanted the two signatures to match. He was gracious enough to humor me and use my pen. See first two pics.

Needless to say everyone in line was impressed with the poster I had. It was a pain to lug that oversized poster around with me, but well worth it.

I also spent a few minutes talking with Ron reminding him that I had interviewed him in 2005 for an article I wrote about the 30th Anniversary of the Doc Savage 1975 movie. See third pic.

He was very gracious and kind with his remarks. And he really liked the costume!!

He got up and took a picture with me, even though they told him to just stay seated and sign away. See fourth pic.

It was great to finally meet him in person and also be dressed up as Doc at the same time!!

Thanks for letting me share my fanboy moment!!

I want to thank Jim Gould for taking these pics. If he hadn't been there, I would have had no visual record of my meeting with Ron. And also want to thank Norma for posting them!

This is really cool. Thanks for posting the writeup and the photos! I saw Ron do a panel (mostly about Tarzan) at last year's SDCC. Great guy. Really fun and charming in an old-school Hollywood every-man celebrity kind of way.

I'll bet getting to meet Ron, and having him sign all those goodies, was the chance of a lifetime...I'm jealous, Tahir! :thumbsup

You both looked awesome, brother!

I didn't see in the earlier write-up, and couldn't tell in the photos; Is your skullcap a foam product, covered in latex or maybe lacquer? Makes for a good texture.

Rock-on! Ron Ely. I've only seen him in Doc Savage, and Tarzan. Glad to hear that he appreciates fan tributes.

Thanks for all the comments!!!

Skytja:

If you go to my previous thread on my Doc Savage costume, I discuss my skull cap in detail.

http://www.therpf.com/f24/doc-savage-costume-80th-anniversary-173463/

It was made out of plastic, the same material used to make car bumpers. Then we used a mold of my head to create the skullcap itself. Then pressed the plastic into shape from the mold. We had to go through two versions as the first plastic was too thin and when we stretched it we lost the texture. The second attempt was thicker plastic and the texture stayed intact. Then just painted it and added a very strong sealer for the shine.

It is very sturdy and does not chip or break. I should know as I already dropped it once at WonderCon when I was taking it off.

It doesn't breathe well and gets a bit hot under the hood. But then again so does the muscle suit. Just grin and bear it, as I am sure everyone else does who wears costumes that are heavy.

Thanks again for everyone's comments!!
