    Sep 24, 2012 - Are these toxic? #1

Since I live in an apartment and have a toddler at home, I have to be weary of what kind of materials I use. I know that latex has ammonia and that it is obviously not good to breath and or unpleasant to smell.
I was wondering about urethane rubber. Also are there any casting plastics that I could use that won't stink up the house or require a respirator?
The project I'm working on is a batman helmet cowl in case it matters.

    Any comments are greatly appreciated

I'm afraid I'm no help in this area, but I wanted to participate in this discussion because I'm always looking for the least toxic materials for my projects, as well. I'm a professional costume designer/maker and I'm just now seriously getting into makeup and mask-making. Best of luck and I'll definitely be following this thread ;-)

You can always put a fan in the window and do your casting there with baby in another room. There's really no fumes after the resin its fully cured.

Get yourself one of these for your window. I converted one of my bedrooms into a studio, and this thing will take care of whatever nasty chemicals I throw at it:

I use two fans. One to blow into the otherwise sealed up studio from inside the house as well as one that blows out through a window. This does a great job of fumes not coming back into the rest of the house.
