Apr 23, 2012 - Taun Taun (Fantamation) damaged. Looking for repair advice #1

    Hello all.

Recently I acquired the spectacular stop motion Taun Taun puppet made by Fantamation and offered here on the board a few years back.

Unfortunately he didnt arrive intact and I am trying to cull as much info as possible on the best way to repair him.

Attached are some pictures but in short, the silicone behind his ankle has split open. This is at an unfortunate stress point as the ankle needs to pivot even further than it is in the pics for him to obtain a standing position.

I know he is made out of silicone but do not know what kind.

I have been told by the maker to use common 3M silicone calk to glue it back together. I will definitely be using his suggestion but wanted to make sure I didnt have any other options that might result in a stonger bond? I have seen a product online called Sil-Poxy Sil-Poxy RTV Silicone Adhesive Product Information | Smooth-On that seems to be made specifically for this type of thing but it requires knowing what kind of silicone was originally used. Unfortunately I do not have that info.

Also, does anyone know what kind of paint I should be using just in case I need to do some touch up?

Thanks for any help/advice anyone might be able to provide.

    Runner,
Hey just wanted to throw in here and mention that Sil Poxy and Sil Bond RTV 4500 is the same exact stuff as the 3M caulk..... it's all 100% silicone caulk and they're all the same thing, just under different names. The silicone I used for the casting was Silpaks R1310, and I would appreciate it if you would clarify that you acquired your Tauntaun from another member instead of getting one from me directly...... because I would NEVER ship any of my pieces damaged like that and I don't want any member here on the RPF thinking otherwise!!!

Thanks for the additional info Jim and yes, the Taun Taun was purchased from a different member here, not directly from you/Fantamation. It was an unfortunate shipping accident as the seller packaged it up expertly.

Just in case there is any doubt, Jim @ Fantamation produces museum quality pieces here folks and has been nothing but fantastic in his desire to help me out in repairing my most prized acquisition.

The caulk will glue it right back together and no one will be the wiser.
