May 5, 2012 - Take him for ballast, Chief. #1

While packing to move house, I came across this Quint head I started so long ago I don't even remember when.

He's made of Sculpy, so wont survive the move, so I'll try and get him finished and cast in resin.

He is about the size of an egg, and yes, he has no eyes. Yet.

Thanks. He's a bit more Ben Gardner than Quint at the moment, but then...nothin's easy is it Chief.

Added a bit more detail this week. But he still has "lifeless eyes...like a dulls eyes..."

Always delighted to see a new JAWS project!

I look forward to your progress on this. An egg - so about 1/4 scale then?

1/4 scale, yes I guess so.
He's been growing in size as I've covered my mistakes (the Sculpey has been hardened to preserve the shape, but then it's almost impossible to work) So it's been a bit organic. right now he's 8cm.

Well, keep that chum line goin' Chief - Quint is a difficult subject in such a small scale, that's for sure. You're off to a promising start though.

Have you seen any of Pat Delaney's Quint figures and sculptures? It might be worthwhile checking them out for reference.

Here's an older one of Pat's from '05, Quint holding his M1 bronze:

Are you planning to make the whole body, similar to Pat's sculpture above, or just make it a head and shoulders bust?

I definately see Quint there but I can't put my finger on it in terms of the eyes, if they are to close together or if he's Squinting more than he should, Quint's brother Squint Lol, no seriously it looks good keep on it.

I'm going for that cock-eyed smile of his, so the face is distorted more than usual. But you're right, particularly with Quint, the expression in the eyes will make or break it.
I certainly haven't seen that sculpture before. can you point me to the website?
( is that the same guy who was gong to do a killer 30 inch ORCA model that never came about?)

That's right, Delmac creations. Unfortunately one of the partners passed away so the licensed 30" ORCA never came to fruition. A sad story on many levels.

I don't think there is a website anymore, but if you go to Jimmy's site JAWScollector.com there will be some of Pat/Delmac's work on there.

Loved 'Squint' and it made me look at the eyes again.
    Reworking now.
The head and neck are all I'll be doing, I can't compete with the quality of the full length statues.

Got a little further with the great little man. Reworked the sideboards and expression around the eyes. (marked some area to take off the nose)

If you mass produce those, I maybe could use one as a shifter knob for my 1974 Blazer

Sprayed him so that I can see the detail to work on.
