Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

That's looking very nice. Is this your first sculpt or have you done others in the past? The ears are a little large for the head - could be a bit smaller.

He looks really happy.

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

this is my first ever atempt at a gremlin, I have made all the mogwai so its Gremlin time now lol

as for sunglasses and outfits Yes thats why im hoping i can make a mold so i can do difrent ones like the flasher, poker player carol singers etc etc.

As for the ears i was thinking there a bit big but what I have done is measure the parts of the mohawk gremlin so making all the parts around the same size as that so although they look too big im happy with it and I think by time I get the body arms etc done and add outfits im hoping it wont look so bad if not never mind I will just have a new race of big eared gremlins lol

Regards

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

Yeah, the vinyl kit you have is of the second movie Gremlin. Maybe I'm just spewing nonsense here, but it just seems the first movie Gremlins had smaller ears than that... don't shoot me if I'm complete off.

Anyway... may even turn out looking less huge when you start doing the body to even things out proportionally.

Keep up the good work.

no your right the ones from the fist movie do have smaller ears i forgot at the time when i was making them.

I would make them smaller if I had used a difrent clay that could be cut down but as this clay is just an ordinary air dry clay if i tryed to cut them down it would just break.

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

well im nearly there on the sculpt ive just got an arm and claw left to do.
i got a bit bord today so even though i know i want to make a mold from this if posable i thought id paint up the head just to see what it will look like lol.

just a few pics of what ive done so far...

For my first atempt at a life sized gremlin what do you think? I dont think its perfect in anyway but for a first sculpt i think its ok. I wasnt happy with the ears so i did a little re shaping to make them just a little bit smaller.

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

well after a few days of not liking the look of my gremlin head I just wasnt happy with it at all and the fact there is no way I can aford to get the silicone and resin to cast them ive decided to go back to my origanal ide of making them from latex. i know it wont last as long but it would be a beter cheaper option for me i think for now.

So I have now re sculpted my gremlin head out of plasticene yes plasticene the same stuff wallace and gromits made from.

I like to use this as it dosnt set hard so can change modify as needed also when making a mold its much easyer to get out of the mold and i can re use it too lol.

Anyways here are a few pics of my much improved and more scary looking gremlin head with much better ears too hope you like?.

Great job, but it looks like he's wearing sunglasses or a mask. Maybe you could incorporate them a little differently so they don't look that way?

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

your doing some nice work mate and pretty quick turn around too

one thing I think would benefit would be using a better clay like chavant or wed especially if your making a plaster mold for latex castings

also find something you can use for eyeballs that you can set into the sculpt so they are perfectly round and then when you have the castings made you can cut them out and insert some nice glass eyes that will help bring a little more life into them

yes That what i did this time around i got some small white balls that i sculpted over to make the eyes round I want happy with how the eyes on the fiirst one were and thought if I used the balls at least they would be nice and round.

im going to mix up some plaster in a few and attempt to make the mold for it gulp fingers crossed it will work I say fingers crossed!!!

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

Thankyou.

Well I managed to get the head molded and the mold apart. i just about managed to scrape out what was the sculpt and from what I can see there isnt many air bubbles well not anywere i can see them being a problem. I'm just letting the air get to the inside of the mold befor i start building up the latex layers for the two half of the head. i think now its just a case of will i be able to get the cast out of the mold without breaking it with so many spines and akward bits. Im still not sure how im going to fill it yet. I was thinking of using some sponge i got cut to ruffly the right shape for inside and then soak it a bit in the latex and fit it in and let it set. must remember to cut the bits for the eyes lol.

ive molded one ear and used the foam for the thicker inside bit with some wire in and thats turned out ok. YAY

just need to mold the other ear and cast a head lol

I will get some of that flexable filling when I can aford it for the next one as this is just a trial run to see how well the mold works and fingers crossed It might turn out ok and that will be a bonus.

regards

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

Well ive managed to get the head molded one ear and the teeth just waiting on the other ear mold to dry befor trying to part it and make a cast from it. ive started to put the head ear together and added some tempery eyes for now but even though I havent got the proper filling foam it hasnt turned out to bad. ive added a couple of pics to show you how its going.

now what im thinking is how do i paint it??? I will mix some latex to the paint to make it flexable etc but just wondering how do you blend and shade colours that are mixed with latex? i wont beable to water ti down will I for doing the light washes of colour over the top??

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

That looks really good! I'd suggest maybe adding a few darker washes and drybrushed highlights to make the colours look less cartoony and pull everything together.

Re: Start of my Gremlin sculpt!

I dont think | would be able to do washes as the paint has latex mixed into it to keep it flexable so I dont know if I could water it down with the latex in the paint? Or can you?

My painting skills arnt very good and most things end up comming out cartoony. Pluss I dont have an airbrush so just hand painted.

Sounds a silly question but whats a drybrushed highlight?
