Feb 16, 2010 - Sculpt the temple of doom monkey #1

HI guys , not not me!!!!
I was wondering if anyone was ever going to scult the monkey head from Temple of Doom?
No offense to the Tanis prop that is on Ebay, but to ME it looks more like a dog or something, maybe that is what the real one looked like??? but $400 Buckaroos?
    .
If anyone can do this I am sure I would not be the only one buying .
    Anyone?

I love how cyclical the RPF is. What is old is new, what is new is old.

Tom Spina did one of these years ago before he became the rock star/prop god that he is today. Who am I kidding. He's always been a rock star/prop god. Tom is my hero.

Anyhow, it was an amazing piece. I don't know if any other old timer around here has pics. I never picked one up, but I should have. It would have been a great addition to the Spina wing of my collection.

Still have mine. Was my first ever RPF purchase/build. Wonderful entry to the RPF, too. You'll have to wait on pics.

Gregg, well stated about how what is old, is new...

It really just means wer'e old. I mean heck, I've been with this board one way or another since what? 1998??? When this was part of the SW vs Titantic Website?? But like my friend Henry says, "it's not the years, but the miles".

I do love hearing about the old stuff, things people never knew we thought of so long ago. I have a number of pieces in my collection that while by today's standards might not be as accurate as something else available, but I'd never in a million years get rid of just because of who made it. My single greatest treasures in my collection are the few pieces I have that Wayne- Propreplicator made. Man I miss him.

I love the pieces I have made by Tom too. I'm just glad he's still kicking around creating things I'll never be able to afford.

It's funny. As I think about it, my props are really a visual time line of my life, at least the last 12 years or so. So many memories in each piece, of friends, not quite friends, the good, the bad. Some of the people I know because of this board are truly the best friends I have in my life.

Ok...sorry for the rambling. Just being an old man remembering the past. Don't mind me.

Well, as a newer member here, I have always felt that I owe a thank you to those who know the ropes and are always willing to share war stories, and even better, their knowledge and experience. Maybe this new and old dichotomy is part of the magic that makes this place so fun to visit.

P.S. SOMEONE SCULPT THE MONKEY ALREADY.

Its hard to get monkey heads here where I could make a sculpt...

The technique like from the Kali Chalice word great, a skull and then just make the skin and work it over the skull. A few hairs and eyeballs...

    Thanks Gregg... too kind man!

I just dug through my old photos and found a few. Man, what a blast from the past!

I gotta say, I'm embarrassed by the sculpt! I guess it wasn't bad considering the lack of reference but the eyes are too big, the brow too "rounded" and less furrowed than it should be... everything's just a little "puffy" on him (IMO). Plus, I think I airbrushed them (which was just way too smooth compared to the spattered/brushed originals.)

IIRC, I repainted my personal copy a few years later with some more spongey type paint and bloody eyes... you can see that one in the pic with the chalice.

Anyway, no doubt someone could sculpt a more accurate one today, now that there are so many pics of originals out there.

Just to be clear, I haven't offered these for probably over a decade, and I'm not looking to do another sculpt (sorry guys!) but if for nothing other than a stroll down memory lane, here are some pics of my old monkeys!

    best,
    Tom

It would be interesting to see some reference of the originals to see how much work is required to get them to look right.

    best,

I remember my first days on the RPF were obsessing over 2 items, the Vader ROTJ lightsaber, and the chilled monkey brains. I actually had the oportunity to buy one of these and couldn't swing it. Been a thorn in my side ever since.

Great pics Tom, especially the stack of monkey heads. Brings back memories.

    Is this an original?

Seems like a fairly "straightforward" sculpt.

That's an incredibly simplistic sculpt... most of the surface detail is created with the paint job, from what I can see.

If that is indeed an original, and assuming it hasn't been restored or tampered with over time, it does look like a straightforward enough project.

Anyone have some screencaps to hand from ToD?

And something a bit different from the cover of A.A Gill's book "Table Talk"

    Looks too real...!

You're right, this wouldn't be too difficult to do. It would all depend on how much detail was wanted.

The screen used ones don't seem to have much detail at all. It's mostly the paint job that gives it detail.
