RANCOR Sculpt FINISHED PAGE 7!

Well, here we go again...

So, after I finished my AT-AT diorama I really wanted to build something from scratch. I've always loved the Rancor from return of the Jedi, and although the AMT kit was excellent, the head needed some work. I figured I'd set myself the challenge of doing it from the ground up.

I'll be making this model using Super Sculpey - probably a mix of the normal stuff and the firm stuff. If it all progresses well I'll split it up for casting and offer it as a kit. I'm aiming for a size of around 10" - 12" height. I'll make a sand base, and possibly sculpt a Luke figure as well.

So, first things first - I watch a load of John Brown's sculpture videos, and they proved to be the best start I could give myself. I have also collected reference photos from the net - AMT reference, gentle giant reference and also some Sketchup models as well as some ILM pictures. There was a french guy (I believe) who had modified an AMT rancor on another forum, and the results were astounding. - I hope to get somewhere near that!

So, I first did a test with Sculpey so I could see how it bakes - I did a portrait from a front and side view of some random guy on the internet:

I was fairly pleased with this as a first attempt - it was a couple of night's work, and it taught me a lot.

Next I decided to do a tiny maquette with a wire frame base. I was going to use this to try to work out a pose, but it was a bit useless for it. Still, the armature gave me a reasonably good idea of how to attempt the larger sculpt:

So, that is where I'm up to. Next stage will be to create a larger, more accurate wire armature.

Thanks for looking!
Chris

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Hi again, a bit of an update: After finding enough reference and a decent sketchup model I measured out all of the skeleton and constructed this wire armature. Part of me thinks it is over-engineered, but who cares - it was fun!

The armature is made from thick garden wire, with steel epoxy for the joints. I have made the figure sectional by using brass rod which will come in helpful when sculpting and pretty much a necessity when casting in resin.

After trying a small amount of monster clay I found it would be perfect for the way I like to sculpt. I ordered 5 lbs of the stuff, which should be plenty. This clay is reasonably tough at room temperature, but with a little heat applied can be softened and used like regular clay. You can also hit it with circuit freeze spray to make the surface hard for carving into. Very good stuff indeed!

That's it for now. I'll be altering the pose and slapping on the first bit of clay soon...

Thanks for looking

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Cheers Alan, really looking forward to it! By the way, I bought a dental torch with a squeezy flamethrower on the end. I'll bring it round some time :)

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Yeah, last night starting blocking out with the clay - I'll post some pictures tonight all being well. How's Kyle doing? I think I subscribed to your thread but I'll check anyway!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Kyle is baked (got a bit dark brown in places) so I just need to sort out the base design and put it together. Looking forward to seeing how yours is getting on.

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

A quick update here. I've started sculpting but I'm a little behind with the pictures. For now I'll just show you the pose I 've settled on. I'm going with a closed mouth version because I just love the look of it. I'm basing the proportions on the Gentle Giant version, but my pose will be more dynamic.

As you can see, the arms are more animated and the rancor is tilting slightly. I'm going to have his head looking to the side and down a little.

Since I started blocking in I found that for some reason I'd made the neck section way too long, so with the help of a butane torch I decapitated him, shortened the neck and got the head looking a little better.

Pics of the sculpt soon!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Okey Dokey, here are some sculpt pics. Bare in mind that I'm just blocking out, and this includes the face! It is funny, I've been looking at anatomical reference for the legs, but when you actually look at them they are pretty nondescript! Oh well, I'll see what I can do...

Criticism very welcome!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

I am loving this thread! :) I love Rancors, too. I don't know how into Star Wars you are, but if you didn't know it there is a planet called Dathomir, which is the home planet of Rancors. So if there is some slight variation, I wouldn't let it bother you. Jabba's is dead, but there are plenty where HE came from! LOL!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks everyone. I intend to get it a load more accurate yet and I've actually taken photos from my TV of the Rancor maquette turntable on the Return of the Jedi BluRay. Thanks Cadeus! - He may be his brother, or cousin or something :)

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

It's coming together great, even though it is still loose it still looks very much like a Rancor. This will be good.
